Hi Everyone,
I appreciate the time some of you will take to read this and provide your feedback:)
I discovered this board recently and it's been great reading some of the previous threads.
I'm a 28 y.o male who picked running more seriously early 2020 (so I'm about two years in now). Prior to taking the sport more seriously, I had been jogging 3-4 times per week to not gain fat. I estimate my mileage was around 25mpw at that time. I have been diligently running between 55 and 60mpw the last six months.
I am reaching out because my best 5k time as it stands is 16:30 as a solo effort set on the roads in my neighborhood (super flat) and I have not been able to run faster than that since July 2021. Now...I have run twice 13.1 miles in low 1:13 in fall of 2021 and winter of 2022. I have also run ten miles in 55:30-56:30 several times as ten-mile races in the last three months. To add to the discussion, my mile PR is 4:51 but I have not raced one in a while and it was in trainers; perhaps I could have shaved 2-3 seconds with lighter shoes but I am not sure. My best 400 ever is 66s during an interval session where I tried to keep up with someone much faster/ younger than me.
Everything seems to indicate that I should be able to get close to a 16-minute 5k or a few seconds below with my 10-mile/ HM times based on 'conversion charts' but running at 5:10/mi pace is completely unsustainable for me right now. 5:20 pace is uneasy but I can 'hold' it for a few miles and I can run 10 miles at 5:40 on my own as a long hard run.
I have signed up for the Carlsbad 5000 race happening in May 2022 in California and my goal is to run under 16 minutes. I plan to follow the Jack Daniel's plan for the 5k to achieve this but I wanted to know if you guys had other 'tips' regarding speed improvement.
My schedule resembles something like this right now:
monday: easy running (7:15-8:00 pace) 8 miles
Tuesday: easy running (7:15-8:00 pace) 10 miles
Wednesday: Speed workout 10x400m, 400m jog. These I have been doing for a while; I can average around 73-74seconds.
Thursday: Hilly run (2k feet gain in 4-miles and then run downhill)
Friday: Longer km repeats (3:12-3:16), 400m jog in between.
Saturday: easy running
Sunday: 12-mile run (with some work at 5:40-5:20 pace thrown in for a few miles)
When I start to follow Jack Daniel's plan, things are going to look a bit different but I wanted to know if you guys had other ideas for me to get more confortable at 5:10/ mi pace...do I just need to run at this pace more often and things will fall in place?
Thanks for reading!
