Depends, like what old people wear for diapers.
No, you don't need a passport...I believe that new law is going to come into effect in 2008. Up until this summer I crossed the border twice each week with only a driver's license.
I went to canada about 5 months ago and just brought a driver's license and birth certificate. I heard about the new law where you'll need a passport, but like the other guy said, I don't think that comes into effect until at least sometime next year, if not longer.
I live in Canada.
I'm pretty sure ths US customs folks now require a passport for us to come into your fine country, but I don't believe our country insists on a US passport.
But, if I were you, I'd do a google search on Canada Customs and try to get the real deal right from the source.
Good luck. We're a good bunch up here. My buddy George (and his brother George) looks forward to your visit. :-)
I suspect you will have a harder time getting back into your own country when leaving Canada.
A passport is not necessary but birth certificate and license it required. Another tip is to have these documents in your hand when you approach the booth, this makes your life a lot easier. also, turn off your radio, remove your shades and be polite, and know your story (ie. length of stay, purpose of visit.)
I suggest that you get a passport, soon you will need one and they last for 10 years.
There is a new law taking effect this New Year's day, 1/1/06. This law will require everyone, including US citizens, to show a valid passport when entering the US from Canada or Mexico. So, you won't need a passport to get into Canada, but you will need one to get back into the US.
And passports take on average 6 weeks to process, so GET YOUR APPLICATION IN BY THE END OF THIS WEEK! It's like $70, but it lasts 10 years, so it's worth it. A 'rush' application takes 2 weeks and costs another $70, but you need to show proof of upcoming travel (i.e. an airline ticket).
