I'm in my sophomore year of college and have come to the conclusion that college isn't really for me. I'm mainly here because my parents want me to be, which isn't really good enough anymore. I think I've known all along that a white collar office job isn't my cup of tea, and I see no reason to postpone the inevitable by staying in college another three years. This school only has a running "club", so I train on my own so I won't be losing out on a good running situation.
I'm considering dropping out, and I've already looked into a local factory job. The work looks hard and the job security is minimal. I've always liked working with my hands, so it seems like a trade such as electrician, plumber, or maybe heating and air conditioning would be worth looking into. What I don't know, and I am hoping some here can comment on, is what it takes to get into these fields? Must you go to a trade school, or do you learn on the job (which I would prefer) via an apprenticeship? What sorts of hours are required, what can I expect in payment & benefits, and how do the unions factor in? Basically, I am pretty sure I want to go this way, but just need some more information. So, if there's any blue collar runners here, I'd like to hear more about your job, and how you work your training around it.
