This is surprising!
What do you think he will run it in?

no idea what he will run it in. that said, i would like to see more of the ultra runners run marathons just so we can get some measure to find out how good they are.
i would also like to see a meb or another great marathoner try a 50 miler, just to see how they hold up.
that might put to rest the questions about how good karnazes/reed/jurek really are.
The top Ultra runners in the world in races like the 100k World Cup and Comrades Marathon (89k) and Two Oceans generally tend to have marathon PR's bewteen 2:15 and 2:25.
Jurek is significantly slower than that but also is more of a longer ultra (100 mile) mountainous terrian specialist.
Glad to see him doing some marathon speed work though.
You insult Jurek by mentioning him in the same sentence as those minimal talent media whores. Jurek has mad skills.

I have no idea what his time will be.
You know who he reminds me of, though? Ian, or Ray, from the movie "High Fidelity".
I'll guess 2:35 to 2:40 will be his end result.
Probably has the talent (given his occassional tempo and speed work times) to be a mid 2:20's guy if he focused on it more but his obvious talent is in the long mountainous stuff.
In the past year or two they started calling him the Lance Armstrong of the Western States 100. Hard to disagree.
But we need to remember as well is that outside of the U.S. road or flater trail ultras are much more popular. The U.S. ultra scene is largely mountain and trail focused.
At the Super Jock n' Jill Half on Labor Day, Scott ran 1:20:53.
34 15/220 1183 Scott Jurek 31 Seattle WA 1:20:52.9 6:11
I said hello and congrats, it was nice to see an ultrarunner put himself in a somewhat uncomfortable situation. He was working hard, no doubt.
The course in Woodinville is not easy for a road runner, with tons of turns and little hills. In fact, you felt like you were going around in circles at some stages of the race. Plus, it was not closed to traffic or walkers (with dogs or baby carriages), etc. It was a fun event with nice amenities for the participants, but very hectic.
I would guess based on his endurance training he will run 2:40 or just under on a course in Austin designed for the competitive runner (long straightaways, short uphills, long downhill stretches).
his p.r. is 2:38 and I ear he's looking to better that, so look for something in the low 2:30s.
Just because "you are looking to better your PR", doesn't mean you will. We all know that. Most everyone is after that goal.

Sam,
I think it's the other way around. I believe we need to see an elite marathoner race a 100 mile course like States to see just how good are. There are plenty of competative 100 milers who have raced a marathon just to see what they can do. I'm sure the elite ultra runner has no illusion about being able to beat Meb in the marathon.
Ann Trason ran a 2:45:39 at the 1999 Napa Valley marathon. This was sandwiched between WS100 finsishes of 18:46:16 in 1998 and 19:44:42 in 2000. She did not run WS100 in 1999.
Jurek ran 15:36:27 at WS100 this year. Of course, extrapolating 100 mile times to marathon times is a waste of time, but Jurek has some decent speed from what I've seen and should be able to run at least 15 minutes faster than Transon.
I agree with Logic that he could run mid-2:20s with specific marathon training over a long enough period.

i think that would be interesting as well.
right now it is virtually impossible to compare marathoners and ultra runners.
The Marathon makes these "super" ultra runner look very ordinary. As they are.

Just like most marathoners would look "ordinary" in the mile.
Road warrior Mike Wardian, a 2:21 marathoner, is racing against the big boys of ultrarunning at the JFK 50 next weekend.
The guy rocks, 7 concsec WS100, then this year less than two weeks after WS100 win, wins Badwater 135mile crazy hot ultra in CR, who cares about a pathetic marathon, 2.25 or 2.55, lets see you take him on in 100m

Oh really? You think the top Marathoners in the world would run a 2:38 equivalent in the mile? What is that like 4:30? I don't think Paul Tergat, Geb, KK, Meb, etc are going to run a 4:30 mile.
Did Trason qualify for the Olympic Trials marathon with this time. '99 would have been a qualifying year. I don't recall there being much said about her running the trials if she did.

And Howard Nippert, a 2:19 marathoner and top ten in the World 100k the last 2 years, will be there as well.
