Arizona State just convinced Dave Murray to come out of retirement - again - this time for the other AZ Pac-whatever school. Should be interesting after he helped resurrect Arizona for Lagat!
It's a pretty sad situation in Berkeley. The Director of T & F is all about field events and could care less about the distances. It's the Camryn Rogers and Alekna show.
Maybe I am not following correctly. How is Lockhart on the hot seat if the Director does not care about distance? Being on the hot seat means someone might get fired because of under performing.
University of Michigan track and field director Kevin Sullivan announced Tuesday (Nov. 8) the hiring of Charnay Ryland as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

This poster is 100% correct. Lockhart is nailing the exact job his head track coach wants him to. And it’s going to continue to pay big dividends for his career…that he can do the job how his boss wants out of him instead of the job he/other posters want it to be. A very important skill in this profession.

Well if you had any common sense, any program that doesn't invest heavily in distance is not deserving of funding

Is that what you tell Florida after they win national titles?

Obviously! You must be new to this board. The only way to gain any respect here is to invest heavily in distance. If you don’t, then your program is horrendous and gets zero respect here

Hate to break it to you but last year at outdoor nationals the top 3 men’s teams went Florida, Texas, Tennessee. Not one of them score in a distance event but the closest was Texas getting 9th in the 800.
The women went Florida, Texas, Kentucky. Florida got a 2nd and a 4th. Texas got a 6th. That’s it. I’m not saying distance doesn’t get it done at nationals but these are the number from last year.
Good teams equal good teams no matter what. Get as many events as you can which usually leads to sprinters getting multiple events and throwers going for many events. Distance can usually only go into one event.
It is pretty clear this new head coach decided to coach the sprints because he wanted to justify hiring his wife. So he fires the popular black sprints coach who is also an alum on his staff and then hires his wife directly after...to coach just the vertical jumps....while also not hiring a distance coach and having volunteers oversee the XC season.....how does blatant nepotism like this still happen and how does this not turn into a lawsuit? Future is looking real bright for this program...
I guess the question is whether or not the assistant was considered for the director position. I always question why long time assistants aren't elevated to lead programs when previous directors/head coaches leave.
From a coaching standpoint this is trading up talent/effectiveness wise. This may look bad to outsiders, but it is the move I would make in his position. It is all at the directors discretion to hire staff. Rarely are assistants retained after a new director is hired. Why is Montana different?

Montana is a glaring example of blatant nepotism. That is the issue. The new director fired a coach on staff to hire his wife. That’s as simple as it is. That is not acceptable. If I was that sprints coach, I would take the University to Court. That is why this is different. Unbelievable the admin was on board for all this and putting themselves at risk. Bad move.
Who is on the hot seat out west? Please only valid input.
Bobby Lockhart at Cal.

They placed better in track and field at a conference and NCAA level than they have in years with that model, who cares where the points are coming from. There are plenty of teams that do nothing but the jogging events and no one on this board complains
