I remember the Gray Davis recall. I was asked at a street festival to sign the recall petition and I said something like "No thanks. Recalls are for people who break the law, so can you cite the law Davis broke? We have scheduled elections and can vote out politicians if they displease us." The guy practically chased me down the street screaming at me, but could not cite a broken law.
Same holds true for Newsom. Bad personal judgement, yes, but no broken laws. Up for re-election in 1 year. Incredible waste of time, money, and government resources.
Once it was clear this recall would fail, the republicans started spouting the election fraud stuff, before the election even happened. We should not be surprised because Trump started the fraud accusations months before the election last year and tried to sabotage the postal service to make sure it was a fraud in his favor. Even with all that groundwork, republicans lost a landslide in both. Seems the lesson here might be to try to appeal to the middle where most Americans actually sit politically.
