Sometimes, when it isn't just your own destiny on the line, but those of others as well, you have to sack up and do things you don't really want to do in the moment. I have no problem with Naomi Osaka, an individual athlete, pulling out of tournaments, but jeez, it seems rotten to pull out of a team game.
This all just feels very scripted to me, I'll be honest. She is the GOAT, for now, but that won't last -- remember when Gabby Douglas was the GOAT, and all the GOATs before? It always happens in gymnastics, GOATs get replaced by new GOATs. So she earned her GOAT status in Rio, and has milked the everloving crap out of her GOAT status, but she gets to Tokyo and feels like she might not live up. So she pulls out and gets the press for being so brave, so courageous, for abandoning the team in favor of her mental health, using all the standard phrases and slogans associated with such moves.
At least she is smart enough to pull out of the individual all-around as well. Imagine how bad she'd get roasted if she only skipped the team event, once she'd technically contributed enough to get whatever medal her lesser mortal teammates could earn for her, but then came back for individual glory.
