Chelimo was just weird during that whole race. If you recall, he was initially DQ'd in the Oly 5000, but was reinstated to silver an hour so later.
I would DQ him for that move. He didn't keep them off the team, but he may have kept them from a 1st or 2nd place finish which might have meant more $$, not to mention being in the record books as the Oly Trials champion.
Chelimo should be dropped to 3rd for that stunt. Nobody else outside the top 3 was affected by that move, so they shouldn’t move up. Fisher and Kincaid should move up to 1st and 2nd.

Drifted but they were not catching him
Fullest and most accurate take, while also most consice.

I had that same thought. There was literally a thread about this a couple weeks ago from a high school where the runner was DQ-ed for nearly the same thing
Different rules. No DQ.
Fisher said post race it was a smart move and everyone does it. I did see them signing some kind of cards in the cool off area...either a protest or drug test forms?
We need more creative ways to sanction people for infractions: ie we need meaningful penalties that are less serious than a DQ.
This could include redistributing prize money, or it could be a time penalty, or it could be that you get assigned last place within the group you finished with -- eg Chelimo is given 3rd place.
It's ridiculous that in the past people have been DQed for stepping on the line in lap 3 of a steeplechase, but Chelimo won't get any kind of penalty here for this egregious behavior.

I do not want Chelimo to be DQ'd, but that is DQ worthy moving from lane 1 to 4 to block Fisher and Kinkaid
And in the after race Chelimo was asked why he ran out in lane 4 and he was proud to boast that he did it intentionally to play with their minds.
Jeez people here are really sticklers for the rules. He drifted, but he didn't impede them.
I don't think Teare can protest because he wasn't affected.
Will Teare sign with Nike/Bowerman and Woody scratches 5k for Tokyo?
Did Ratcliffe really sign with Nike/Bowerman??
Not in Lanes Disqualification shall be ruled by the Referee when a competitor:
1. Flagrantly jostles, cuts across or obstructs another competitor so as to impede the other runner’s progress.
Direct contact is not necessary; any action that causes another runner to break stride or lose momentum can lead
to D.Q
2. Flagrantly veers to the right or to the left so as to impede a challenging runner and causes the challenging runner
to run a greater distance.
3. Voluntarily leaves the track and presumably the race, then returns later to continue the race.
4. Tries to force a way between two leading runners, and makes direct contact so as to impede the progress of
either, or
5. Steps on or over the curb with two consecutive steps of the left foot.
Note: The Referee, after consulting with the appropriate officials, shall not D.Q. competitors who: 1. Are pushed
or forced by another runner to step on or over the curb with no material advantage gained. 2. Step on or over the
curb on the straightaway unless an advantage is gained by improving position.
Wait until they get into the Olympics. This is SOP.
Certainly grounds for it via condition #2.
One statute of the rule for a lane violation DQ applies when an athlete intentionally veers to add distance to another runner... and Chelimo admitted that verbatim on camera that he veered to add distance because they were fitter.
No one can ever be lane DQ'd again because if Chelimo's isnt, no ones is.
Rojo thinks Chelimo should have been DQ'ed and Gault will write an article about how the real hero was the white kid in 4th.
Paul Chelimo acted like a prima donna this entire race and i lost respect for him. Ive always respected him and appreciated his grit but that was a whiny little wimpy way to win. Fisher and Woody definitely wouldve smoked him and I wish Teare wouldve gotten him as well. No longer a Chelimo fan, Paul stop acting like an emotional, territorial teenager
This is the most accurate take.

I'm not a Chelimo fan or hater particularly, but he did make things kind of interesting throughout the race. He's entertaining if nothing else. Maybe he has a little bit of a "crazy like a fox" thing going on? After all, he gets the job done.

Say what you want about Rojo, but he definitely does not think Chelimo should be DQ'd.
Maybe NBC at 6 PM CST

One of the bowerman athletes should scratch for Teare, but they definitely wont
Why would they do that? I can definitely understand it if they think it's in their best interests to put all their effort into concentrating on one race only at the Olympics, but at the same time, I don't think they have any obligation whatsoever to Teare just because he tried hard and came up a little bit short.
Earning Olympic berths might be the pinnacle of these guys careers. It's what almost every track athlete is striving for. Can't expect either of them to just give one of their berths away.
There is a long history of athletes making it to the Olympics in more than one event, but this idea that they "should" voluntarily withdraw from one of those events is a new one. Yes, I'm aware of a few cases where people on the US team have voluntarily given up one of their spots, but the harsh reality is that these were not altruistic decisions - the athletes who did so were just choosing what they thought was the course most likely to lead to success.
And in my opinion, Teare's membership on the Olympic team, if it were to happen, would be cheapened somewhat if it was just given to him. Everybody understands the appeal of the Oly Trials phenomenon of athletes desperately battling for that coveted 3rd position. 3rd is the promised land; 4th is nowhere. Heartbreaking, but that's what makes it so great.
