Huh?
What makes me a freeloader? By not getting vaxxed, doesn't that mean I will get (or maybe already had and just don't know it) Covid and thus contribute to herd immunity?
Well, off for a run. Living my life without fear, just as I have for the past 16 months. Not masking. Not calling people who disagree with me idiots, or murderers, or selfish.
In the process of getting to your level of immunity you will be contagious to others. In addition to some being unable to get the vaccine, some will have an impaired immune response, and cannot get strong immunity from either infection or vaccines. You put them at risk.
Also, no vaccine is 100%effective. For herd immunity that is not required, in fact you could probably get to herd immunity with a 70% effective vaccine,(like J&J) if almost 100% of the population got it. If herd immunity is not reached, however, those people who got vaccinated have their risk reduced by 70% instead of 100% which is a big difference.
And no, I am not concerned for myself, I am concerned for the community. I am about as immune as one is likely to get.
A personal story here: Over 20 years ago, I had what felt like a minor infection and felt well enough to work so I went in. My boss contracted the disease from me, and unbeknownst to me, had a serious lung disease. She ended up in the hospital for an extended stay, and the last time I saw her she was on oxygen and probably hadn’t reached 40 yet. Since then I have paid attention to when I might be getting sick as that is a highly infectious period, and have masked up when I suspected I was infectious and couldn’t distance sufficiently That was long before it was “virtue signaling.” Honestly it got me some funny looks.
All of this is based on a boring, standard reading of the medical literature.
Finally, the need for children to get vaccinated in order for the community to reach herd immunity goes down if more qualifying adults get vaccinated. You seemed worried about kids getting vaccinated , so you could help.
