People here seem to think marathon training is bad/counter to 5k/10k training. Especially in the 10k, the training is very much the same in many cases. Rupp, being so far ahead of any current US 10k, could very well make the team. My 2 cents.

If Rupp is just 90% of his former self in the 10000 and in the new super spikes, he'd probably run a 10-15 second PB in the 10000 if he did a 10000 training cycle. I think if he went out balls to the walls and made it a 26:30 race to win it, he would win it.
I am not going to insult you. You really do not grasp what is happening here. It is OK. Galen likely cannot even run 13:15 so there is no chance he can double it. Galen at his absolute best struggled when running 13:00 5000m pace.
13:00 is nowhere near what Rupp was capable of over 5000m. Put him in a BTC time trial in his prime and he’s going under 12:50.
If he returned to 10k training I have no doubt he would make the Olympic team.

Intelligence matters. I am sure you think Tadese was capable of a 2:04 marathon too. Galen had many bites at the apple and he managed to run 12:58.90. Galen was NOT a great 5000m runner. He was actually quite mediocre. Not nearly as good as you fanboys believe.
I'm confident Rupp would win the 10,000m at the Trials. It's his wheelhouse.
It’s fascinating how polarized the responses are to this question

Not nearly that good?
Rupp being American Record holder at 3k (7:30) might tell a different narrative, Dooshboi
Oh, also indoor 2 mile AR holder and5k indoor AR holder.
Oh, also, has Lomong run a 3:50 mile??
Has Lomong even run an 800 let alone hit the 1:40s??
...How about the other way: has Lomong broke 60 minutes for half marathon yet?
Forget about the OTs,Have those other "studs" even made a world or Oly finals in 5k or 10k or both?
Because Rupp has. Doubled in 5k AND 10k making world/oly finals:
2011, Degau
2012, London
2013, Moscow
2015, Moscow
Podiums?? Wins?? ARs??
Rupp = too many to count
All others mentioned.......Zero
You have proven my point. Galen was a mediocre 5000m runner. He is the 9th fastest U.S. 5000m runner and has no medals at 5000m. This is the resume of a mediocre world class 5000m runner. I assume we are measuring Galen Rupp as a world class runner and we do not have to lower the bar for him. Mediocre.

I agree that his 5000 results are somewhat disappointing, although the 13:01i is pretty good. I gotta think that if Rupp put his focus on the 10000, he'd win the trials. He has closed in low 50s in a 10000, so I don't think 55 is beyond him with proper training.
You guys are living in the past. If Rupp had a shot to win he would be running. His days of running sub 27 and closing fast are YEARS ago.
He could run 12:59 and 26:55.
Rupp could sleep walk and win the USA 10K. This is our weakest event internationally.
For some reason, Rupp was never a truly great 5K racer. His 12:58 PR is good but you would expect a better time from a guy who can run a 3:50 Mile, 7:30 3K.
In Rupp defense, the 5K was never his priority.
The USA will maybe have one guy who makes the finals in the 5K or 10K in the Olympics.

I think he isn't running because he has no shot to medal at the Olympics. He ran a 1:00:23 half last year, which is almost exactly the equivalent of a 27min 10k. I don't think he is closing in 52, but he can compete with Lamong, True, Fisher, etc. and I'm sure those guys know it. If he went out and ran a 27:45 to get the standard, they would all be paying attention.
I'm not sure there is anyone on the thread saying he would 100% win the trials, but he would be a contender. My guess is he would be 5th, but if he came in top three or won it wouldn't surprise me.

Did you guys watch the 2017 US championship? The 2019 one?

Kipchoge moved to the marathon when he could still compete in t&f but the Marathon is a bigger deal with bigger $$$
Bekele too moved to marathon when he could still win at 5k and probably 3k on the track
America's finest, Rupp, moved to marathon too because it's more prestigious, more$$$, and he already had international medals for years at 5k and 10k.
Rupp never trained it was coached for PRs or time trials.
If he did, his times would be even more impressive.
Instead, he raced to medal or win. And he did

Are you serious dawg?
Lomong was an Olympian at 1500 in ‘08, and made WC squads at that distance in ‘09 and ‘13.
His 1500 PR is 3:32.2, equal to a 3:49.0 mile. He never technically ran as fast as Rupp’s 3:50.9i time trial, but he ran 3:51.2i and has a faster outdoor PB (3:51.45) than Rupp.
He placed 5th at 800m in U.S. outdoor finals I’m ‘07 and ‘08, running 1:45 each time. His 1:45.58 is likely a second or two faster than Rupp could have run in absolute peak July 2012 form.
Either you’re trolling or you started following the sport in the last few years, and haven’t bothered to do much research.

Everyone you mentioned failed to make a global championship at 10000m and then stopped trying because they saw the writing on the wall.

Also, this is incorrect.
We only have to go back to 2017 to see him get beat in the 10,000 (wasn't even top 3) ... And in 2016 olympic trials it wasn't a cake walk for him then either. Now we are four years further down the road, I'd say no way he would win the 10,000. He wouldn't be able to run away from anyone solo, and he doesn't have the closing speed anymore to beat the guys who are running low 27.
And for the 5k he would get dusted. I'd be impressed if he could still run a 13:12, but you've got several guys running faster than that.
Whose beating Rupp in the 10?

I actually disagree. Lomong ran 27:04 at WCs in Doha, and last year he ran 12:58 for 5000m. I think he would be tough for Rupp to beat. I would favor Rupp in his prime, 2011 - 2016 range, but I think I'd give Lopez the edge right now given Rupp's surgery.
If Rupp focused solely on the 10,000 for about a year I think it would be a good race and I'd probably give Rupp the slight edge. But Lomong is no slouch.
