Because setting PRs is fun. If you're over 35 and think you have a realistic chance of PRing, go for it! But it's completely irrational to put in a similar amount of work for a much slower time (relative to your lifetime best).
You have a choice: A) Work hard to stay fit, or, B) Say f- it, get fat, lazy, out of shape and old. It's your choice buddy. Choose B. See if any of us care.
Serious training and being sedentary aren't your only two options. You can also jog 2-3 miles 4-5 times a week (or something similar to that). That's a lot less of a time commitment, and it still keeps you healthy without the demoralizing impact of training harder to run slower.
