Jonathan Gault has written a feature on the upcoming Ethiopian Olympic Marathon Trials. There's been a lot of rumors about the race which no one had even heard of until March 5th. We want to share some of what he wrote with you here. Generally, our features/profiles are behind our VIP/Supprter's Club paywall and our race previews/recaps/news stories are open to all. This article is a little bit of both so we figured we figured we'd share news items from his story with everyone here. After talking to a bunch of people including the Ethiopian Olympic Marathon coach Haji Adilo Jonathan can confirm the following. 1. The race is scheduled for Geneva, Switzerland, on May 2. 2. It will be a full marathon. 3. It will feature a "top 3 and you go" results format. If you are top 3, you are on the Olympic Marathon team. If not, you aren't. Sadly, it looks like Kenenisa Bekele will not be on the team.

"I don’t think he’ll run [the trials] because it’s a short period of preparation for him," Adilo says. "He was thinking to run Olympics, but [the] trials [was announced] one month ago, so I think he’s not ready for this, from what I understand."
According to Adilo, Bekele did start training for the trials once they were announced, but his father died recently, which interrupted his preparation.
"For that, it’s a break [from training]," Adilo says. "For that reason, I don’t think he’s ready to run."
