That's my terminology for "workouts" that begin with a longish run, gradually decreasing to short. Examples:
3200-1600-800-400-200-100
2400-2000-1600-1200-800-400
1200-1000-800-600-400-200
600-400-300-200-100
5000-3000-2000 (I'm doing this tomorrow.)
10k-8k-6k-4k-2k (For marathoners.)
10k-5k-3k-1500-800-400-200-100 (Tempo to sprint, totalling 21k.)
I've always loved the idea of mixing long speed with short speed in the same session, especially in this "slide" format, where the pace of a particular run is really a warmup for the faster pace of the next run. Always good to look forward to shorter and shorter runs. I'm surprised at the number of runners who say they dislike these sessions, preferring repeats instead, or long runs on one workout, short on another.
Are there any fans of these slides? What do you feel are the benefits?
For those who dislike the idea, what do you feel are the disadvantages? (I often hear "not enough stimulus at the right paces").
