Nico would ideally need a super spectacular moment to consider leaving. But some training groups might consider giving him the call up. It's obvious he is as good as most NCAA champions.
the way katelyn tuohy would have won the indoor 5k and now for outdoor her biggest threat is a 6th year senior who also shouldn't have been eligible to compete...
i know all runners that enrolled in 2020 will get an additional year, nothing against the 6th/7th year seniors, they make it more exciting and competitive but it sucks for the younger runners being robbed of a title
if not for the additional covid year, both young and tuohy would have been ncaa champions on their second year in the ncaa
If he keeps thinking he can leave it to the last lap and he's over confident in his kick like Grant Fisher then yes, he will never win an NCAA indivual title. (well Fisher did win one title SO year, but that was vs McGorty and Knight; this field was much weaker).
He ran 13:11 and has never closer in a 55 or faster. He should have known at the pace he couldn't leave it that late. I'm not trying to knock him cause for a RS Freshman that's a great result and he's showing good promise, but you have to be honest with your strength and weaknesses.

He is much more like Cheptegei who also never closes sub 55, but was Olympic Champion last year. Nico should take a page out of Cheptegeis playbook.
Then again, I remember we were all saying Rupp didn’t have a kick, until he did. Rupps 2008 year he never won anything because he lacked a kick, from 2009-2012 he developed one of the best kicks ever for an American long distance runner.
It isn't arguable. They are eligible. You act like they faked their paperwork or somehow cheated. Maybe Nico shouldn't be able to train at elevation because the 2 guys how beat him don't.
While you’re “technically” correct, that’s an idiotic comparison to make.
Literally the only reason these extremely old seniors are around is because of covid. He’d never have competed against these ages in any ncaa season ever. That has to be taken into consideration when analyzing Nico’s current status and future.

Young will win NCAA XC this fall. The race will be held at Stillwater next year (same course where he got 4th as a true freshman) and he’s even stronger now. I’d consider him the favorite.
Another NAU dude will probably win the NCAA party before Nico does.
cole sahlman will probably win an ncaa title before nico does
Honestly, this isn’t a crazy take. Colin Sahlman has crazy speed and endurance and a ridiculous finishing kick. Given that he’s probably already in sub 13:40 5k shape this year, if he can get to 13:20 or faster shape next year he could definitely kick for the win in a race like the 5k today.
Yup. And honestly I'm not sure why the LDS church was ever given an exemption to the eligibility clock. It's not religious discrimination when the guys are still age-eligible to go on their missions at 23, after they're done with NCAA. If they really want to serve a mission, then they can put their pro career on hold to do it; it's not fair for the 99.9% of athletes that aren't Mormon to have to compete against grown men.
Cross country team coaching aside, why exactly should we consider Mike Smith as a great track coach??
Seems Andy Powell is better considering both xc and t&f and women's squads too. So much talent, but why only a single athlete in 10k? Or 5k, ....or 1500?? ....Why coach your young stud with incredible strength but average kick to sit on a 13:30 pace for 11 laps??
mercy chelangat will turn 25 years old next month and shes a junior, katelyn tuohy turned 20 years old 3 months ago and is a sophomore
I was 21 years old in my last race of eligibility. Red shirts have become more and more common, as well as people seeking out medical hardships. and it's making championship races more competitive since more athletes are still in the NCAA at older ages. Decades ago you not only didn't have a red-shirt, but some athletes were forced to not even compete their freshman year, so they really only competed for 3 years (Bit Ten).
Does anyone have the stats on what percentage of All-Americans today are in their 5th year or more of college? Instead of everyone doing 4 years and being done like 2-3 decades ago.
If Nico is anywhere near as talented as Rupp, then Brosnan and Mike Smith are absolute hacks.
That post hasn't aged well. Do people realize Nico is 19?
PRs at age 19.
Galen Rupp: 3:44/13;37 Nico Young: 3:37/13:11
100%. Like anyone he’ll have to keep improving, but he’s certainly not behind where he’d have to be to be a low 12:50 guy with good closing speed. Don’t be surprised if Nico is in the next two Olympic 5k finals

Honestly, yesterday might’ve been the best Nico has ever looked during a race. Sure, he got 3rd, but his form was really smooth and light, night and day compared to high school. With his form not holding him back anymore, he’s going to keep on making solid progression forward.
Anyone who's still doubting Nico is a moron at this point. He got 3rd to two guys who were 5/6 years older than him, by less than a second with a very sub-optimal racing strategy. The future is looking good for Nico Young.
