What's the cheapest way to call Europe? I've seen a lot of calling cards you can buy online, and used a few, but they seem to be pretty worthless. Anybody got good ones? Is there a better way?

Good question. I've been calling Africa a lot lately with those calling cards you get at internation markets and such. They suck. They always tell me at the beginning of the call "You have 20 minutes for this call", but I rarely get more than 10 minutes before it hangs up. So $2 for a 10 min call, guess that's not half bad to Africa. Pisses me off that it tells me I have 20 mins when I don't, though. Doesn't make sense.
It's not exactly phone, but if you have broadband, check out Skype
Deano, that's been my problem. The minutes seem to go triple time. I'll check out skype.
i was really satisfied with card from www.nobelcom.com. They usually offer 4 different cards and the one that worked best for me was the third from the left.
I'm wondering if it costs more to call an international cell# instead of a land line, and that's why the minutes go double or triple time. Someone here probably knows.
Yes - particularly if you're calling Kenya. In Kenya, any number with 254-(7...)is a cell phone and will cost more. The upside of this, for the Kenyans, is that there is no charge for incoming cell calls there.
It's too expensive to call cell phones in Europe... even with Skype.
Does anyone know of any other options?
Interestingly enough, calls to Uganda are less than half the cost of those to Kenya.
Do any cell phone companies offer good int'l deals? Text messaging seems cheap, relatively speaking (10 cents per message as opposed to the 5 I pay for domestic), but texting is a pain.
I use something called firstphonecard.com...
but it does double or triple to cell phones...but to a landline you can talk 14 hours for $20 or so (to Europe)...
Try Skype. It is not really that expensive to call mobiles in other countries with it.
17 cents a minute to a cell in France with Skype. That's not all that great.
My calls are all going to Senegal. I've been using "Extreme" phone cards, and they are not great. The international market here has about 50 different brands of cards, I'll have to try another.
yeah more or less the same to spain...not cheap at all
Just bought one off of nobelcom. $.195 per minute. Not great, but I'll use this while I keep searching. Why is it 20 times more expensive to call a cell phone? Seems that a wireless company should be able to offer something better, but they're (at least Verizon) offering rates of about 25 cents per minute.
It's expensive to call cell phones in Europe because we don't pay for incoming calls. It's not like the US where a minute on the cell phone is a minute on the cell phone, no matter if it's incoming or outgoing. You call my cell, you pay. I call your cell, I pay. It's cheaper to call land lines.
So the person gets charged more for calling a cell than a land line because the cell service is more expensive.
