Bingo. And Psaki clearly stating that masks and distancing would remain AFTER vaccinations. It just gets more bizarre.
I am happy to explain this to you as it's not bizarre at all. All vaccines thus far have been tested for efficacy against preventing severe cases of COVID-19. This is why hospitalizations and eventually deaths are decreasing for vaccinated populations.
Vaccines have not yet been tested for whether they prevent infection altogether. This means that vaccinated people could be walking around with an asymptomatic case of COVID and spreading it to high-risk populations. That is why we need to continue wearing masks at this point, but it does remain a moving target. As soon as we know this piece of information, we might not need to wear masks. Or maybe we will and we will need to seek a new solution.
If you are struggling with the idea of missing all of your planned events because you had expected the pandemic to only last a year, try thinking of it in a different light. Instead of looking towards a date in which everything will be normal, look at it as when we will have figured out preventing infections we will be able to return to normal. It's tough for everyone, but I assure you that there are people working tirelessly to find a solution for you.
