Best idea yet.
Who in god's name would want to come to America, the hotbed of the Pandemic. for the Olympics? Nice way to get 10,000s of the world's athletes infected. Oh, and then they can take it back and infect all the athletes in their home country. Nice thinking.
Every Olympic athlete would want to. They would be tested daily. Stop worrying about it Mrs. Cravitz.

If you have been training your whole life for this one moment, in this case the olympics, then you’ll probably take your chances with COVID.
A Florida Olympics won’t be allowed regardless.

Sydney would be the logical choice
Sydney's not a good choice IMO as Australia has almost no covid right now. A place that has gone with the full containment strategy may be very weary of letting in foreigners.
+1000, dude. You are exactly right. It will end when the politicians want it to end, not a minute before. WHO has already confessed (1 hour after Biden's inauguration), that the commonly used PCR test is resulting in at least 50% overage of false positive cases (some medical scientists have estimated it's more like 97% false positives) due to too many cycles being used (over 35) which over-amplifies fragments of virus and results in a positive (false positive) test. WHO is now recommending fewer cycles, which will dramatically reduce the number of positive tests.
Next, the US politicians (which includes WHO, a very political organization) will decide to cut or eliminate the COVID bonus paid to US hospitals for reported COVID cases. Also, Fauci or some other political a$$hole will say that COVID deaths should be now be counted only as those dying FROM COVID, not WITH COVID. Other BS changes will happen too - MSM is finally starting to report on the increased suicides, opiod deaths, and mental health problems, what took them so long to report on this? (HINT: it wasn't January 20, 2021 yet.) Cuomo and other Dem governors are already calling to open up indoor dining, schools, small businesses, etc. Right on time, after the inauguration.
With the criteria changing for positive test cases and cause of death for COVID, the daily positive case data and death data will magically drop over the next few weeks/months. Grandpa Joe will be declared a hero for beating the virus and people in the US will gradually be permitted to resume really living and working together again.
This is more political BS than I have ever seen in my entire life and I'm old enough to have seen too damn much of it. What the politicians have done mentally to our younger generation in taking away their sports, their schooling together, their friendships, and their ability to just go about their lives normally and have fun as kids is evil - I pray every one of these lockdown politicians burns in hell for eternity.
Yeah, you're rational.
It would be impossible to hold the marathon in Florida. The 5k/10k would be horrible to watch too.

FWIW, I agree with you. However, on a whim, I googled the hotel capacity at the Walt Disney World complex and realized that I had stunningly underestimated the capacity of The Mouse. They have 36,000 rooms on property. If you took 20,000 of them, and then maybe housed media at some of the nearby resorts, I actually think you could come close to having a decent bubble.
The fan situation would be way more challenging. But I think you could house the athletes and ancillary folk with relative ease, as the resorts are designed to be closed systems anyway.
No idea of venues in and around Orlando, though. I suspect you’d have to move a lot of things indoors due to the heat and constant mid-afternoon thunderstorms in July, and you would need to get rolling in things like a white water kayak venue immediately.
I honestly had to check the date to be sure this wasn't an April fools home page for LRC. I actually think that a case could be made for moving the Olympics to a giant Div. I school in a very small town to be able to bubble off the games. The schools are mostly empty in the summer, have plenty of housing and all of the facilities needed for most of the events. But I would put it at a university that is in a small town that is isolated like Washington State or Indiana. That way you can effectively contain any outbreaks.
Florida would be a disaster. The governor does not give a rat's a## about COVID 19. Any weird variant that might get loose during the games would easily spread across Florida and then the rest of the US.
Also, Florida in July is in THE MIDDLE OF FREAKING HURRICANE SEASON. And even if they luck out and get the games in without the threat of a hurricane, the weather in Florida in July is horrible.
Finally, this CFO guy has totally overstepped his bounds claiming that venues like Disney will be ready to give up thousands of hotel rooms for the Olympics. By summer, hopefully, most people will be vaccinated and will be willing to travel. Disney will be packed and looking to recoup lost revenues, They will not be ready to give up a post-pandemic summer so Florida can host archery and team handball.
The best idea yet is that if Tokyo doesn't want to host the games, then to host the games in multiple cities where each city takes a certain event or two. Massively reduces Covid exposure, athletes still get an Olympic Games and every major city in the world would require next to zero infrastructure investment.
Obviously, from a "international broadcasting" standpoint, it makes it tougher, but online streaming is the way to go. This isn't the 1950s thru 80s where there was literally 3 channels to choose from.
Given the Olympics is a huge, huge financial burden on the host city/country (and often a huge money loser), this could be chance for them to "re-invent" the Games as we know them. Then again, the IOC isn't exactly known for forward thinking.
These kinds of discussions just seem to push this site further into irrelevancy.

What's the payoff for ANY city to do this? What city would be motivated to ever bid on hosting an Olympic Games ever going forward? IOC is never going to agree to this idiotic plan.

Funny enough, wejo used to seem like the rational, thoughtful, smarter twin. Now it's looking more like a race to the bottom between those two.

Well, for one, there is economic gain. Visitors will come to each city to watch...that means revenue for hotel rooms, restaurants, local shops, etc. Want further proof of this? Look at how much money the Olympic Trials bring to Eugene in visitor spending

What is the motivation now besides bragging rights? In almost every case, they all spend way more than they actually bring in to construct the athletes dorms, the venues, etc...yes, it can be an economic spur, but it can also be a huge drain.

Fixed the quotes
Wake up, the Olympics of today is a 2-week marketing/propaganda campaign for the economic might and cultural wonders of a given city/country. It gets wealthy people watching and wanting to visit to do business or as tourists. You lose the 2-week focus and you dilute that benefit to nothing. And it's literally been DECADES since any Olympics were held in the black, economic tourism benefit during the games is merely a fractional offset.

The chance of a significant hurricane hitting central Fl in July is pretty low. Yes technically it is hurricane season, but the big ones normally won't ramp up until late August.
The average temperature in Central FL is only 2 degrees F degrees warmer than Atlanta, which hosted in 1996.
If Orlando held the games in July the expected average temperature would be identical to the average for August in Athens Greece, where the summer games were hosted in 2004.
So weather should not be a deal-breaker.
Doesn't matter where it's held. Are they planning on bringing in in a bunch of geriatrics and fill the venues with old and unhealthy individuals breathing the same air? If not than no one is in danger of getting sick and dying.
Go to the Olympics and don't visit your elderly relatives you never visited before the scamdemic anyways.
