Yeah I'm not convinced that a 38.5 year old who has never made a US Olympic or World Championship (outdoors) team is a certain better option at a good marathon performance than Molly Seidel. Call me crazy.

The reason Sara Hall is not Ryan Hall is because of the Olympic Trials.
The reason Scott Fauble is Scott Fauble is because of the Olympic Trials.
There are many great marathoners who cannot perform in a championship setting - Matt Llano, Jordan Hasay, Emma Bates, Emily Sisson...
And then there are the clutch -
Salazar, Hall, Meb, Deena, Spence, Eyestone, Pfitzinger... Joanie... the list goes on of marathoners that weren't the fastest on race day but beat people head-to-head..
I picked Sara Hall to make the Olympic Team coming off her 2:22... I am baffled how she got crushed in Atlanta.
At the time of US Olympics trial. The projected Olympic marathon was going to be hot and challenging. The US Olympics trial was devised to select the candidates best developed for those conditions. Sara Hall proved she runs fast on a flat course with ideal conditions. The actual Olympic course will not be ideal. I think we are sending our best. And only time will tell how pregnancy effects Tuliamuk.
I think the OP raises some good points actually...I’ve read some comments about Sara’s consistency...Hall goes big. She reaches high and sometimes it hasn’t worked out but when it does it REALLY does. That’s why she’s elite and that’s why she would be great on the marathon olympic team. On an international level she’s proven she can hang...I don’t really know how consistent the other three have been (not to knock them) but wasn’t it the first marathon for the second place women at the trials? Also I don’t know how consistent Alphine has really been but she’ll be running the Olympics 6 months post partum.... there still can be a lot of healing going in the first year really and I hope she doesn’t try to bounce back before her body is ready...there’s really no telling how soon she’ll be ready for an elite race, but obviously baby comes first. So honestly I don’t really know how the women’s team will do but there’s no denying outside of the three going to the Olympics there’s some serious marathon talent for women in the US currently.
Seidel ran London and posted a nice PB. Not medal worthy time compared to the rest of the world women but a great run for her.
She absolutely could not compete for a medal. She doesn’t even have the fastest American time much less could she hang with the 2:17 crowd that is running now.

With that theory Galen Rupp would have not won a Bronze medal
Haha!! Just laughing at the screen name ‘Fat Cactus’
I can't believe this is happening, I am appalled!
You’re right in Siedels first two marathons she’s done really well. Like J Hasay with her first few marathons. The US just has many very good marathoners right now. The top 3 that were determined by the trials was unpredictable.
The 2:17 argument being internationally competitive ....even if we had a 2:17 marathoner heck even a 2:15 marathoner she still wouldn’t be running if she didn’t finish top 3 in Atlanta or at any trials.

Im not an American, but didn't the US medal in the mens marathon in the last Olympics? Deena and Meb also medaled in 2004, shalane got 6th in Rio (5th really if you discount sumgong), less than a minute away from the podium, and meb got 4th (I think?) in London.

With Sara Hall being off the team you are clearly not sending the best team to Tokyo. Is there anyone that can argue against that? So why having trials if who you send is not your best team? Can anyone at least try to argue how the current team *is* the best possible one. Because I cannot.
And I know the trials in the US seem like the holy cow that cannot be touched but then please do not whine when you never even get close to medalling in the marathon where the trials being run on such a ridiculous course produced such flukes. Anyhow if I was from the US I'd be really unhappy to see a 2:20 woman who has been so consistent recently not going. She could compete for a medal. Its quite the insanity.
😂 😂 😂 #Molly
