Can someone explain to me how running in your early 40s is not some desultory march toward increasing aerobic obsolescence? Twice in my late 30s, I ran 2:50 at Boston--less than 5 years ago. I also ran 1:18 in a flat hm. These were lifetime achievements for me.
Since then my aerobic capacity has dropped off a cliff. I know I'm going into a period in life when we all start to lose muscle and slow down, I just didn't think it would be this dramatic. I doubt I could break 45 min in a 10k now. Every workout is a slog. 8:00 min pace feels like a challenge sometimes. Add in heat, humidity or hills and forget about it completely. I start to wheeze when I even get close to my threshold. I can't run more than 5 miles without stopping to walk.
My lifestyle hasn't changed a that much. I've gained a little weight (5' 9" / 140) but am otherwise healthy. I get our for 30-35 mpw, but none of it is enjoyable. I know I'm shooting in the dark here, but has anyone turned it around in their 40s. WTF are these masters runners who are able compete with kids decades younger than them?
Or should I just bag it and take up golf?
