Hey rucker,
I do my trail running in Topo MT3s. If you're looking for more room in the toe box, that might be a good option - Topos typically have a nice combo of a wider toe box with more lock down in the back. The MT3s are somewhat lighter than the Caldera and Evo (9.3 vs. 9.9) and significantly lighter than the Speedboat 4 (10.8) or Pegasus Trail (11). 5mm drop, which is comparable to the Hokas you mentioned. They're not as heavily lugged as some trail shoes, and they don't have a rock plate, but I run decently technical New England trails in them on a regular basis without issues. While they're definitely not a road racing shoe, they also work fine on the roads and should be a good option if you're looking for something that can transition from that stretch on the AT to the canal section of the JFK course (which I haven't run myself, just to be clear - going a quick look online).
You might also take a look at Topo's MTN Racer. I haven't run in those, but if the MT3s were to go away, I might look in that direction myself. Slightly heavier, somewhat grippier, seems to be getting good reviews.
Hope this is helpful!
