I'm just three years younger than Bill Rodgers and, you know, a lot of other top runners of his heyday. In "our day," there was a 30-39 (or 30-34 and 35-39) age group in a lot of USATF meets, including the track championships. Based on the results from those championships, I could have run 5000 and 10,000s at the "nationals" rather easily. But I harbored no illusion that I was even i n the top 50 nationally in my "age group" so I never even thought of going to the nationals. And neither did a lot of other top "subvets" who stayed away. The winning times in the 30-39 were often slower than the winners in the 40-49 bracket.
Now .. I mean, really, are people who show up at 25 to the age group "nationals" actually going to harbor illusions that they're the best in the country. Seriously, what is it with pursuit of cheapened titles in this sport?
