Justin Gatlin 9.74 letting up - Are you kidding me?

Simple: that would be a no. Nobody keeps PRing in the 100 10 years later, running faster than ever and times that 1 or 2 people EVER have run. Let me say that again. He is running faster at 33 than all but 1 or 2 people OF ALL TIME! HES A CHEAT!

As I said in another thread, the cynic in me can't really get upset about this whole Gatlin thing.

He doped. He may still be doping. Whatever. Bolt, Blake, not to mention the rest of the Jamaican and American squads, are insanely dirty. It would be tough to make an argument about Gatlin's "advantage" over his competitors.

If anything I'd say he has a (slight) DISADVANTAGE given how lax testing in Jamaica is compared to America. Not to mention the fact that Bolt is a sacred cow of the IAAF - like Radcliffe. No way he ever gets popped.

If anything, I root for Gatlin because his personality, demeanor, and age make him one of the most colorful and interesting sprinters on the scene today. Compare this Bolt, who is sketchy and aloof and acts like a clown when he finally does show up for competition.

Also, unless your day job is a "guess your weight: carny, how are you eyeballing his weight? Did you factor in the camera putting on 10 lbs?

I'm not sure of the science of it all but speed can be improved with age.

I ejaculate a lot quicker in my 30's (if at all) than I did in my 20's.

You would also want to note that Ryan Bailey has already gone sub 9.9 legal. In 2010, he ran 9.88 once and in 2012 ran 9.88 twice.

I watched this race again just now, and see what you mean by "letting up". But I don't think he was letting up at all .. he leaned for the finish about 10m early. Odd.

Gatlin's performance is interesting to me in that, while I believe he is doping, I also believe he's been doping all along. So that doesn't explain why he managed to PR at 33 - that's still unusual. What is the explanation for the continued improvement? Getting away with taking more dope? Or maybe a new drug?

What I found really interesting is the number of people who actually acuse Rupp and all OP off being in the "juice", but a 33 years old sprinter who already served a ban, is running his fastest time so late in his career..

Sure it's not a big deal to get faster as you get older. You will generally be faster as a 15 year-old than you were at age 10, and faster at age 20 than you were at 15. The question is, when IS it a big deal to still be getting faster? Because it obviously stops at some point.

Baseball has a well-known meme that age 27 is when a baseball player hits his career peak. I Googled this, and there are a lot of articles about it. There are even a lot of articles trying to debunk it, but they all seem to conclude that a baseball player hits their peak around age 25-29.

Not sure how this translates to sprinting, although personally I would have thought sprinters would tend to peak even earlier than baseball players. Baseball players might peak physically at a certain age, but their stats might continue to improve due to continued improvement in nuances of the game. Hard to see how this would apply to sprinters. But, FWIW, I looked up the 10 fastest sprinters of all-time, and the age at which they achieved their best time:

Bolt - almost 23

Gay - 27

Blake - 22

Powell - almost 26

Gatlin - 33

Carter - almost 26

Greene - 25

Mullings - 29

Thompson 29

Bailey - 28

Surin - 32

And a few other noteworthy sprinters who aren't in the all-time 10 fastest:

Lewis - 30

Fredericks - 28

Boldon - 24

Christie - 33

yes old guys have ran fast with steroids

before but never as fast as this peptide

allows. and generally chronic steroid use

will shorten career involving speed

due to stress puts on liver,kidneys etc

and by late 30 definitely not running pb

with exception of dutch carribean sprinter but not super fast and involved hgh

is water weight from all testosterone

When I mentioned a few weeks ago that I will never understand how a certain athlete in August 2007 could not break 19.80 in the 200m and also had never broke 10.00 in the 100m, and then 8 months later was running 9.72, I was told to get over it. Now that Justin does something equally great, its questionable? Good for you Justin, kick Bolts butt. For the past 7 years he has fooled the world and now since it became public that Jamaica would have to improve its testing, Bolt has to decrease his steroid taking exploits. Usain you have two options, accept deafeat, or risk doping and hopefully they will finally catch you. Mostly I want to say to you that before you go and blindly label anyone amongst elite sprinters as dirty do a little research like actually watch elite athletes practice and observe things up close. I know of more than a few elite athletes that have done it totally clean. This topic makes me want to scream so loud to everyone who calls themselves fans of the sport - shut up with false accusations and unless you have real suspicions then don't make them.

Gatlin has tested positive and will forever be doubted as to his cleanliness and rightfully so especially that his resurgance has occured with a coach who was busted and the coaches' wife tested positive and one of the athletes he now trains with served a serious ban also.

Gay also deserves scorn for his choices and is suffering from them. But look a little closer before accusing a guy based on nothing,
