Unless Tamagno's or Maton's team had a chance at winning NXN, they both should go to FL. Placing high at FL this year will be much more meaningful than placing high at NXN. And at least their teams still get to go to NXN, they'll get their free Nike stuff and be happy.

The National Individual Championship will be crowned at Footlocker Nationals in San Diego.
The young men's field assembled for this years FL race is highly anticipated. The field is very talented, very deep, and in a different stratosphere when compared to NXN. There is absolutely no reasonable comparison of the two races this year other than Footlocker being the significantly superior competition in all aspects.

Yes, Mantz won Bob Firman 14:51 to Anderson's 14:55. Mantz was looking really good until his injury this fall. Hopefully he's rounding into form for these next couple weeks.

Why do you have Pollard placing so high, considering his results haven't been anything *special* (I know, he's a fantastic runner)? Iowa bias?
Can't shake the notion that someone random is going to change the entire race, and may even get top 3. If the top 8 guys are looking at each other too much, someone could sneak away with an upset maybe, a la Meb at Boston.

Fair question on why Pollard is high on this list. Probably a little Iowa bias. Maybe we just haven't seen Pollard at his peak yet. He is a gamer.
Agree someone may catch fire and jump up and finish high that we aren't picking yet. That said, I think the winner comes from my list.

Why can't these guys (Tamagno & Maton) just wait for track season to achieve their personal glory instead of abandoning their XC teams when the need them most? My guess is, they all want a piece of the Grant Fisher pie, and don't mind riding on his coat tails to get their share of the spotlight!
...Yeah, gonna go ahead and retract my statement after that one. I watched the interview with him when he talked about going to NXN with his team and thought he was a good guy, and in all of his previous interviews, like last year it seemed like he really cared about succeeding as a team. But yeah, guess it isn't the case. Maton is the same, I've even talked to kids from the Summit team and they've said that he was a total jerk to them after Footlocker and has been the same since. Except in his interviews, he just comes across as a moron anyways. Whatever man, Mikey Brannigan should just win for the hell of it.

I'm not saying he will win, he wont, but the top finishing sophomore will be Matthew Pereira, who qualified as an individual out of NXN Midwest. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the top ten.

I'd include Anderson in here too... He makes himself look good in the media but he's the opposite in real life. Cocky as all f**k and ditches his own teamates at events when there's better runners around to hang out with and always tries to be the center of attention. NO CLASS...

Interesting!! Tanner didn't ditch his teammates when they qualified for NXN. He very well could have went to FL instead but he has CLASS and decided to run with his team. The top XC runners all know each other well, they have gone to Nike Elite camp, Border Clash, Brooks PR and more together. It is wrong to want to hang out with other runners besides your teammates??

I really don't think NXN is a lock. Both Rocha and Webb from CA have the ability to win.
