Sprinters peak at different times. There's nothing that says Lyles will continue to progress. I would like him to, but it's not necessarily a linear progression in performance

Chepkoech ran 8:28 and 8:44, whereas Jenny Simpson ran 9:12 and 8:29.

Are you seriously telling me that Chepkoech is just so far superior a hurdler? The wr holder was already nabbed.

Chepkoech is tall, a great hurdler for a Kenyan, and fast on the flat. I still say this is a doping positive in the making.

I expected Centro would continue his improvement and run 3:33 here. It is incredible that he could run 3:35 well behind many and then drop four seconds in his next race. Why people always want to get on here to pronounce runners done when they're still coming back from injury is beyond me. He may not ever be competitive for the win in a sub 3:30 race, but then again he might well actually be in sub 3:30 shape by Zurich this year.

Filip Ingebrigtsen really stepped up. Very, very impressive to run 3:30.01. His brother Jakob ran 3:31 at 17 after his impressive World Junior races last week. Hard to believe how rapidly he has improved this year as he got his growth spurt. His improvement curve was already going to be early because he was coached by a great coach and trained with top European pros from early on, but this is something else. If there was a coach of the year in track, it might have to be their father. Henrik showed that he was in shape as well with that 13:16 earlier. Jakob has also shown a champion's mentality this season. He is going to go for fast times; he has a very strong kick; and he has excellent racing instincts. Now he can be said confidently to be a medal threat next year at 18 and a gold medal threat at the Olympics in 2020. I had him at 3:31 ability after his World Jr. performances, especially the 5000m, but it is still surprising to see it actually happen. I rate this as remarkable considering how lousy Europeans have run for years and years, having lost the mental game and the hard work needed. I am not commenting on the Kenyan juniors in the same way simply because there are very poor age certification standards in the country and a long history of age cheating, as well as limited doping controls.

Lyles is showing himself to be both consistent and very good at pressure races. Very impressive and sure to move up to 2nd American all-time next season if not in Zurich this year, if they have a 200m.

Jager ran 8:01 and gave Bakkhali someone to draft off of. Well, that's another very fine race for him, and maybe if he stays in Europe, competes at a 1500m for speed, and then runs the steeple in Zurich, maybe that sub 8 will come. He is right there and probably just needs some race sharpening. When he says he can't race frequently on his training schedule, he is failing to see, I think, that his top shape, tapered, will last for weeks and requires race sharpening. Centro ran 3:35 in his first Euro race this year and then dropped 4 seconds. El Bakkhali dropped around 11 seconds for this race from last week. Jager ran his best ever race the first one in Europe at Paris in 2015, but he needs to remember that he was coming off of heats and the final in very hot weather in Eugene just before that, so he was race sharpened and ran 7:57 pace to the final hurdle.

Agree completely. Lyles' lack of awesome physical gifts is more significant than running these times at this age. He is a freak but not a Bolt-level freak.

Rai Benjamin in the 400 hurdles has the obscene frame and athletic ability that could equate to a world record in that event.

And I still think we'll see a men's steeplechaser the equivalent of a Chepkoech, capable of taking that record much lower. The steeplechase males are still second tier compared to where they should be. The rare athletes simply don't prioritize that event.

People love to create false information - Jenny ran 8:42 when she ran 9:12. You can't pull a PR from 2014 and compare with a performance from 2009.

Very good point, the Women's WR in 3000 flat is a suspicious outlier.

Watching all the replays of ridiculous performances across the board, destroying all the seasons' bests so far, what I really want to know is why Marcin Lewandowski was wearing a nose plug. How could that possibly help in an 800?

Marcin is obviously trying to peak for the Euros. He was using the nose plugs as part of a resistance training. Once he peaks and runs without the plugs he's going to be flying.

First of all, you're obviously referring to me with the real WR comment. I have no idea what the fastest real WR clean could be. There is a long way to go, but Jakob looks to be on course to potentially run faster than El G at some point, and I believe him (Jakob) to be 100% clean. I believe the obviously ridiculous anti-doping standards and repeated busts in Kenya should lead a rational person to bracket all Kenyan performances at this stage, and that's obviously very sad for any athletes - such as Tim - who may be clean. I obviously don't have a slither of your coaching knowledge and understanding of top level athletics, nor of the inside story on Kenya, but I can read and watch the news. Most rational people and fans of the sport will have trouble believing what they see from Kenyan runners on the track are real, after the Kiprop bust and the circumstances of it regarding cups of tea and friendly texts etc, the 61 doping busts previously, the fact that the team manager of Rio is about to go on trial for running a hospital based doping ring, and the obvious age cheating that we just witnessed again at the World Juniors.

You mock me for saying something I didn't say - that the clean WR has to be over 3:33, then wax lyrical again over somebody who has just been busted for EPO and who couldn't break 3:33 the season before whilst still in his prime (after running 3:26 only a few years ago), as an example of somebody with natural African genetic talent who could surely have ran 3:23 if he'd only had the hardworking ethic of merely 'very good' talents of Europe such as the Ingebrigstens.

The fact that Kiprop won xcountry titles as a junior doesn't mean that he was a clean and natural talent who suddenly decided to take EPO last winter after 'getting lazy'. His lifetime coach (David Letting) was coach of the Kenyan cross country team for years. You would know far more than me or anyone else here as to whether it's possible for a simple-minded Kenyan runner like Kiprop to administer EPO without the knowledge of his coach, but I'm with Steve Cram in the call for coaches of runners who fail tests to be banned from the sport.

Cheruiyot and Manangoi don't need any doping for running what they did this night, exactly like Filip and Jakob. I repeat again : if a talent like Asbel, world champion while junior in cross country 8 km, and able running 1'43"15 in 800m, had the same motivation, continuity and professionalism of El Guerrouj or of the great British of the 80 years (Coe, Cram, Ovett...), the WR today could be 3'24" CLEAN.
