As a couple, they're both just baffling. Sara showed strong improvement in the 5k at the end of college only to win nothing but the most meaningless of races as a pro and getting all mixed up with the wrong events for her. Ryan di$cover$ he's a marathoner and abandons the track completely, performs awful at tune up races before a few good marathons and now can't even start a race. I wonder what would have happened if they never joined Mahon's group after Stanford.

There is easily a 5% chance of something like this happening 2 years straight. Running has a lot of risk.

Ryan Hall is still my favourite American runner to watch. He believes the most insane goals, does things like go out at sub-62, 4:20, run all alone as fast as the lead pack but ignoring them, and compete with people you'd suspect are way over his head.

Also, he has really consistently blown our minds. He took american long distance running a long way, with a solo sub-60, aggressive 2:06 early in his career, and a groundbreaking 2:04 (for non-africans). He was the first to do all these things among US runners, and every time he raced, he'd approach with something crazy and interesting.

Hope he comes back with some strength for at least a 2 more runs.

I also hope he comes back strong.

But until then, he'd do well to sit down and shut up for a while.

I can't remember how the numbers crunched after his 2:05 in Boston given the tail wind.. which is superior, that race or 2:06 in London? IIRC the wind was credited with a 2.5 min or so advantage?

So he hasn't completed a race in 2 years, and his hip is aggravated, so he quits?

Imagine that in another sport. He'd be ridiculed. Check that, he would no longer be part of any other professional sport, because he hasn't done anything in two years, so it wouldn't even be known that in his "zealous efforts to have redemption" he got "injured" training to get back into the sport.

Running is messed up, and embarrassing.

That's because in a team sport a talented but injured player can still help the team. Marathon running is not a team sport. Running at 80% doesn't benefit you or the sport. Hall running a 2:25 or getting a DNF because he's injured would be pointless and silly.

Good thing he has a Stanford Education to fall back on because this running thing isn't going to pay the bills much longer

I agree with your earlier comment. Much of his injuries can be attributed to the fact that he thinks he is a 2:04 marathoner and adjusted his training to get to an ever higher level. Surely an intelligent human coach would have set him on the right path.

Maybe he should do some low key marathon where they have less than 5 sub 3's a year just so he can come back with a win.

I still like Hall, but lose respect for him each time he fails to even get to the starting line. Staying healthy isn't that hard if you're smart. Sometimes stuff happens that you can't help. But he's been doing 18-20 miles a day for months with 2 long workouts a week totalling up to 12-15 miles of running at 450-510 pace.... what does he think is going to happen if he's doing that while he's recovering from an injury.

There are any number of individual sports where injured athletes compete on a regular basis, including every combat sport, swimming, tennis, triathlon, etc.

He states his hip was "aggravated," not immobilized. He states "it has not been able to fully calm down," not that it is so damaged that he cannot run, etc.

He is just protecting his tenuous marketing image, since with no finishing time in 2 years, his sponsors (and the public) still have a vague hope he will compete at the same level. If he runs at 90% and 2:12 due to an "aggravation," he solidifies his passing.

Ryan has become an uncoachable athlete. He can't stay with a coach, he can't stay healthy and hasn't even competed in any major race in 2 years.

He either needs to back off and suck it up with a coach or just race. He seems to DNS for any little pain, unless he has a major underlying problem he is not talking about.

This is just sad news for such great talent.

3:40 was the official line.

Hall's 2:04:58 was roughly the equivalent of a 2:08:38 at Boston with no wind. That would be about 2:07:30 at London.
