negative surprise - Kyle Merber! I know he was the rabbit and he dropped out at 1200m - but wish he could have hung in there for an indoor PR. Maybe it is "bad form" for a rabbit to stay in the race, but still wish he'd have given it his best effort the final 400m.

So to be clear, you were SURPRISED that the RABBIT dropped out? ;)

Anyway, biggest loser- the pacer of the women's 800. She went through the 200 in around 26 or something ridiculously fast like that.

Biggest winner (among many winners)- Hassan Mead the 10000m man doing work and almost winning the 3000! Unless I'm very mistaken, that's way under-distance for him and an awesome performance.

bad wording on my part - of course we expect rabbits to DNF. I was trying to say that I wish Merber wasn't the rabbit, so that he could have grinded out a good finish.

Agreed on the poor pacing of the ladies 800. Merber did OK as a pacer - he slowed down after 200 when he saw that the guys did not want to really blister the first 800 (or saw that he was a little too quick). Maybe he could have paced them just a tad quicker through the 3rd quarter. Oh well, hopefully they paid him enough for his efforts.

To be clear, Merber paced them to a Millrose record and helped Centro get a #5 all-time indoors. That's a pretty good job. I think part of the pacing duties isn't just hitting the splits, but re-engaging the field if they don't want to go with the rabbit.

Is Mead a 10K guy? He's run good 5K but I haven't noticed him at 10K.

I'd have to watch it over, but I remember Andrews just looking like he couldn't handle the pace when it cranked up, not that there was a sudden gap, but that they just strung away. Of course they were blazing, but you would have thought it was the perfect Robby Andrews set up at halfway. If Wheating keeps going, I'll have him over Andrews for the 1500. Blankenship probably too.

Have you ever raced a longer event on an indoor track? It's far easier for the faster runners if the slower runners being lapped stay exactly where they are. It reduces the possibility of collision and it keeps the faster runner from having to guess what the slower runner is going to do and when he or she is going to do it. With multiple laps, multiple runners it's the best way.

He was on the U.S. team in Beijing for the 10000.

Top Africans have been competing in Europe. Remember the Glasgow meet was also yesterday. And the Galen indoor meet last week.

Was clever of Flynn to bring in Su Bingtian given New York City's large Chinese population. Wonder if that actually drew more attendees?

Biggest winner: my lady Jordan Hasay. Even as she was being lapped she still believed in herself. Most runners would have conceded defeat and moved outside. She remained in lap 1 attempting with great courage to come back and win the damnn race. Who else would do that? She had the heart of a lion. A champion lion.

I'd say Kerri Gallagher as a big winner. She ran a really, really smart race- she was in the back of the field until about 400m to go and worked her way up to right behind Rowbury during the last lap and worked her way up to second by the end.

I'd also say that the friendliness of all of the athletes there last night was a winner as well. As a high school runner, it was so cool to be able to take pictures with runners like Rowbury, Willis, and Efraimson and high five Centro. Extra props to Shannon Rowbury for being the super nice after the race and taking pictures with everyone who asked. She even gave me the bouquet of flowers she got for winning. That was awesome. One of my favorite parts of pro track meets is how close and approachable the athletes are. I looked up as I was drying my hands and Molly Huddle was right behind me. I walked up the stairs next to Eric Jenkins. As I was walking out, I said hi to Edward Cheserek. That wouldn't happen at a NBA game!
