I hope this finally puts to rest the idea that Farah ducks tough competition. He may not be a great person, he may take illegal drugs (he certainly takes legal ones), but he's never had a problem racing anyone and everyone. I have no idea how this idea has taken hold.

He has shown up to all the global outdoor track champs recently (obviously), and won most of them.

He has run the 1500m against a world-beating Kiprop and stellar fields two of the past three years.

He ran the NYC half marathon against Geoffrey Mutai and Stephen Sambu, losing to Mutai and outkicking Sambu (and fainting).

He ran the London marathon with one of the toughest fields ever.

He's run that XC race against a peaking Garrett Heath, where the only media upside he could get would be...beating Garrett Heath.

He ran world indoors a few years ago when he was in good, but not top shape, and finished 4th in the 3k.

His half marathon PR came against at least one other stud (Karoki?) where an off race would have meant a loss.

He ran the Great North Run soon after Worlds against Bekele (and Geb), and he's been hearing ever since about how the 1-second loss makes him a mediocre runner.

He has run a bunch of Diamond League meets, including one when he was sick. He doesn't run the whole circuit, but he certainly puts himself out there.

He went for (and got) the indoor 2-mile world record last year. I believe there was pretty good competition in that race.

I think there are two reasons people have this stupid opinion about Farah:

1) He rarely pushes the pace in races, especially championship races.

2) He's not racing Hichenisa Komeselassie at full fitness (and blood chemistry).

Look, you may not like him, I don't really like him, but one thing he's done consistently over the years is ****ing race people. Let's appreciate that.

Gotta commend Mo on this one. He is my least favorite runner (except the dopers who were caught), but this sorta feels like a "gloves off" decision if he wants inclusion on the historical GOAT podium.

What's the over/under on DNS or DNF by fainting?

Maybe the fact that his best event is 1500 but knows he can't medal there so jogs the 5/10 has something to do with it?

Right, we don't really know what he could run in a 5k or 10k. I think most of that problem comes from posters' speculation. It's not like his PRs are slow. But you're right, it would be nice to see him time-trial his main events.

Well said. It is hard to fathom his reputation for not competing when he has seven gold and one silver World and Olympic medals.

I agree with you except that the 1500 is his best event, so he's "ducking" in the sense that he goes for the low(er) lying fruit in the 5/10 double instead of a 15/5 ala El Guerrouj. The fact that his PRs are slow (by GOAT standards) and refuses to time trial lends itself to Mo being a businessman first. Also fueling the internet reputation for ducking.

That said, I don't think he looks at start lists and then disappears or some shit like that. Who knows.

for those of you that do not know the cardiff area, winds can be massive. this could easily change the entire race.

Farah has finally decided that to be placed in the goat contest he will have to lower his pr's and also move up to half and full marathon. This year will be his last at 5/10 unless he still has the speed. From there he is moving up to claim more credibility

I'm anything but a Farah fanboy, but for those guys dissing his 5/10000 PRs, in order to understand what he could run in a properly rabbited, ca 1997-2002-type Diamond league meet 5000/10000, just look at his two 3:28s, which are the one distance he can be assured of having to chase the pace hard the whole way. If Kamworor or somebody had it in them to run 12:40/26:20 pace the whole way we would see a different story as far as PRs go.

The only distances that are run fast any more are the 1500 and marathon, both of which are outside of Mo's wheelhouse (well not so much the 1500)
