It is rather confusing why she hasn't raced in the second half of the summer. She was just starting to get back in shape, she chose the 3k and Juniors because there were no heats and she could just train through it, which seems pointless considering it was her last race.

Also there is no way her school would let her just skip the first two weeks of class. I was always confused why she acted like she could do that no problem. Usually you get dropped from any class when you miss the first few lectures, which means after two weeks she would likely be enrolled in zero classes.

She won a World Junior Championships title as an 18 year old who had injury issues earlier in the year and some people on this site act like it was a failure season for her! How many other American distance runners have done that?

I think it was wise of her to focus on getting situated in college and having a relatively low key season, given the injury and her recent graduation from high school. There will be a lot more pressure over the next three yeas with 2 Senior World Championships and the Olympics sandwiched in between.

All of this makes perfectly good sense, but it also conflicts with what she was saying a few weeks ago, which leads to the speculation about what changed. Reckon we'll be hearing more over the next week or so.

How could Cain continue to lower the high school record, the new high school year/ xc season has already started? Last years freshmen are sophmores ect.

Also Cain hasn't been eligible to run in high school meets for a long long time. I hope we dont have to pretend Cain is breaking college records the next 4 years because she happens to attend some classes.

They're just having a hard time dialing the NOPe dosages. They really don't want her to get popped and have to have another round of bribing ala centro.

Somebody tweet ken goe or one of these other so called insiders. Isn't it their JOB to be on top of stuff like this?????

The silence is getting louder with each passing day without comment from AlSal or the NOP. Silence rarely signals anything good out of that bunch. Something seems off about this.

Ken Goe didn't post anything between Aug 11 - Aug 25 so I'm guessing he was on vacation. He's already posted a bunch of stuff this week, so if you're curious, drop him an e-mail [his address is on the Oregon Live web site and he's responded promptly the couple of times I've written to him.]

p.s. His job is what Oregon Live pays him to do, and right now, that's mostly cover Oregon football.

It does seem that way. Since she was initially entered in Zurich and the stated goal all year has been to run fast in August, I'm surprised her camp has been completely silent.

It is a shame we didn't get to see more this summer after such a promising winter campaign.

Mary Cain has been keeping a low profile since winning the 3,000 meters at the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships in July, but that is about to change.

Cain, who runs professionally for the Nike Oregon Project, expects to compete in the Fifth Avenue Mile next week in New York.

"She's had some great workouts," Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar said. "She's healthy. She's ready."

Cain had planned to run in Diamond League races last month in Stockholm and Zurich. But Salazar said he and Cain decided she wasn't in peak condition for Stockholm. Salazar said Cain was in shape to run in Zurich last week, but they chose not to travel to Europe for just one race.

Cain is a freshman at the University of Portland, which has begun classes for the fall semester.

"She told me she didn't want to miss school," Salazar said. "In the end, I didn't want her to get stressed out and miss classes. She would have missed five days of school."
