Vaporflys are the ultimate hobbyjogger shoe yet are also bounced along in by the pros so this tells me nothing...
What specifically would make them suitable for the hobbyjogger, and the hobbyjogger alone?
The pod are meant to act as springs, absorbing the impact by compressing and releasing like a normal mid sole but more so, the holes and centre line cuts down on weight, I tried at an expo and was not taken by them, comfortable but no different than any over light EVA running shoe and more a gimmick plus I can see debris being caught in them like the Nike free line. Design wise, very well engineered but they are were t for me.
They do seem a bit gimmicky but so did the 80s and early 90s Nike air max with their air pocket in the heel. I never ran in them so i cant say if they were good or not. Kinda like the ON Cloud shoes.
I've never worn them but my local running store had a group run where everyone got to try them on for free for a run (we went like 6 miles), and all of the feedback of the people who tried them on was positive, which surprised me because people are usually picky about their shoes (I am, which is why I didn't want to try them on). Someone asked the rep (who did the run with us) if the shoes wear down faster than normal trainers, and he said they last just as long as normal shoes.
Bottom line, practical experience seems to indicate that they're not a complete disaster.
They're Swiss made so I would definitely give them a try however they do not look stable enough for what I need. In Europe I see them at all the running stores. They are generally expensive, too.
I like their light weight for races. Not for offroad but no problem with rocks/debris in the holes on roads. Overpriced so buy only on clearance.

they have had issues with durability. poor construction quality or maybe poor material choices are probably to blame.
also, they certainly are no better than other shoes for the same price point. lightweight and stylish, yes. great shoes? no
This man is spot on
Bought the very similar ON Cloudjumpers 5 mths ago because I’d forgotten to pack my trail shoes and it’s what the running store on the way to the arpt had. About 800 pretty rough miles on them so far, plus another 500 or so when I sometimes wear them for road runs just because I like them. They look clunky in photos but don’t feel clunky on.
Lots of granite and grainy asphalt for my pair, a lot of it after dark with near-trips. I fully expected the toe to come loose per reviews but they’ve held up extremely well. Also, they don’t look obnoxious in a dark color.
I only have one run in my new Cloud X before a severe calf injury took me out of running for at least 8 weeks.
ON shoes feel entirely different the faster you move in them. At slow speeds, they are... squishy is the best word I can come up with. The sensation goes away quickly as you adapt to the shoe.
At faster speeds... sub 7 minute pace for me... the Cloud X becomes very responsive.
