"Why are so many running so fast? More women are running, certainly—and perhaps, getting healthy inspiration on social media.
“There’s no doubt the depth of women’s marathoning in the U.S. has skyrocketed over the past decade,” said Sarah Bishop, a coach and mother of four who qualified at CIM in 2017. “I have to think this is a direct reflection of more women simply getting in the sport—which has led to an enormous increase in BQs [Boston qualifiers] as well as OTQs [Olympic Trials qualifiers]. But I also think the popularity of Instagram usage in the past five years as a daily tool to post workouts and goals has been a huge motivator for a lot of women as they follow certain athletes and see what could be possible.”"
Really? This is the key factor driving the size of the women's trials field?
It's because the standards for Women are a joke. Not being sexist, it's a fact.
And you all thought LA was a bad idea.

These women aint running fast - they are slow pokes allowed to gain entry for political correctness. Women - get off your lazy duff and run faster!
that course looks stupid as sh!t
The 180 degree turn a few miles out from the finish seems like a questionable decision.

But the standards were the same before, so that can't explain the increase in qualifiers.
BREAKING: Based on this topic title, ate you also the anonymous poster of this thread?
Good catch but I promise I am NOT the one who started that thing (I wouldn't have even thought to post something non-running related to this board..does anyone ever do that?!?!).
There is no need to complain. Atlanta is paying for ALL the qualifiers. They will take care of the athletes and make up for the s***show that was LA. Expect Tokyo to be hot as hell with plenty of 180 turns.
Never understood the excitement for the US Olympic trails. Which other countries do it this way?
On the men's side it's 2:19 or 17 minutes over the WR
For the women it's 2:45 or 29 minutes over the WR.
Seems kind of soft for the women.
But if people get excited about it, that's fine with me.
I think they just should pick the 3 best, 9 month before the Olympics so they can prepare well.

What do you mean by paying all of them. Do they get a free start or do they pay hotels and travel for all of them too.
Seems a little excessive for the 2:40 women crowd who has no chance of getting to Tokyo anyway.
Yes, Atlanta is paying travel and hotel for all the athletes, regardless of whether they hit the A or B standard. The women's B standard can't be tightened cause it can't exceed what's set by the IAAF. This has been hashed over and over again on here. The athletes can handle a some hills for an all-expense paid trip.
ATC will provide meals, up to $315 travel and shared hotel accommodations for all qualifiers. There will be a secondary option for single hotel accommodations, but the details have not been finalized.
Registration fees fall under USATF, not ATC.
The bid was constructed with an athlete first mentality and level playing field for all from a fiscal standpoint.
There won't be any women under 2:30 and only Rupp would have a shot at sub-2:15 on that course.
That's great.
At least that will create some awareness about our sport.

Nope, it's because U.S. marathon men are weak. Not being sexist, it's a true fact.
That course is whack. They get to do that crazy turn at the top of Peachtree four times? I'm not saying you should have a flat straight course, but this has to have more turns that just about any North American marathon there is.

A big field can be fun. Honestly, though, the way the Japanese are approaching it will make for both better incentive for development and more exciting races. 200+ starters per race makes for a nice starting line shot, but >90% of them will be invisible to TV viewers by 10K. It's charity to include them, they're all OT tourists, regardless of sex.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
