I’m probably one of the only kids who don’t smoke or drink on my team since I don’t want to ruin my body or make myself slower.
But everyone else on my team smokes/vapes, drinks heavily, and they rarely practice yet they are faster than me still. These are guys who heavily smoke and drink still splitting low 17 high 16 5k’s while I’d be lucky just to hit a high 17 5k.
Can someone explain how my teammates can ruin their body with drugs and alcohol but are still faster than me?

Michel Jazy smoked.
According to Canova, Gelindo Bordin smoked a little bit when not in serious training.
Herb Elliott said something along the lines of when he started serious training again he would quit smoking.
I've always thought that eating super clean was the secret to success. But as Don Kardong said, "Avoid any diet that discourages the use of hot fudge." and, "If you run 100 miles a week, you can eat anything you want - Why? Because (a) you'll burn all the calories you consume, (b) you deserve it, and (c) you'll be injured soon and back on a restricted diet anyway."
Just focus on training, as in mileage. Everything else, like core work and diet is nonsense.

My great grandmother smoked since she was a like 12 or something, she lived just short of her 90 th birthday. She walked everyday, up till her death. Never suffered any real ailments from smoking. Me personally, I believe the harms of smoking is overblown. I mean as the smoking rates in America has been declining, as the obesity, diabetes and other diseases rates is going up. I don't smoke, I do not think it is good for someone to do, but I do think the harms of smoking has been overblown.
Explanation: They have more talent than you, so they can squander some of that talent on smoking/drinking/vaping and still be faster than you. They're young and there hasn't been enough time for long-term effects to show up. In 10 years, some of them will look like absolute crap. In 20 years, even more will have edged into absolute crap in the looks department, and chronic illnesses will begin taking a toll. Source: my high school reunions.

But smoking and vaping (maybe even drinking) aren’t along the lines of diet and nutrition. You’re literally putting in chemicals straight into your body

That’s horrible. I work so much harder than them while keeping myself pretty clean while my teammates are kicking my arse by running 15-20 miles per week if even and heavily drinking and smoking
Put some crack in a smoke pen and tell it’s a new flavor, trust me they won’t be running anymore.

On the flip side my grandma and grandpa smoked since they were like in their 20s...my grandpa died of esophageal cancer at age 70 and my grandma of congestive heart failure at 77. There are many many risks to smoking and sure some can get by without any problems, but don’t think it is being overblown.
OP it will catch up with them, I wouldn’t stress it too much. Just keep putting in the work.
As several have said, it WILL catch up with them. Maybe not soon, but it will. The better your genetics are, the more you can get away with.
