I work a low tier job at a large company that specializes in work that is related to my major. I have had the job for about 4 months, and in that time I have barely gotten any assignments to do. I did not expect too much responsibility, but certainly more than I have gotten.
So far I have been doing BS corporate busy work, making copies, scans, etc., and after a few days of that I received no assignments. In my free time, I browse LetsRun, study college material, and just try to teach myself how to navigate programs better. When I handed my supervisor the papers he asked me to work on the first week, he told me he would give me more work when he has some for me.
I spent a few weeks barely getting any assignments, and the tasks were just busy work that didn't even need to be completed. However, the last 2 weeks in a row, I have actually gotten 3 assignments that are related to the company's work. I was thrilled to learn and gain experience. The first job, my boss/supervisor gave me a day to complete, and I did it in about 5 minutes using my high school knowledge. I finished the second assignment with some help with one of my higher-ups and learned about new computer programs. The third assignment I was having a bit of trouble on since I never used the program before, and this time didn't have anyone to help me. My boss had someone else complete it last week.
I come in today (before my boss, as usual) and get setup on my laptop and open my work email, and to my great surprise, no assignments. I quietly do my college work. A few hours later, my supervisor walks into my cubicle and asks me what I am doing to which I respond "nothing much, if you need me to work on anything for you I can." He says "No, I meant right now. Have you just been sitting at your desk doing nothing all day?" I reply "Well I've been doing work for college." and he ends the conversation with "If you run out of things to do you are supposed to come find me so I can give you something. I will give you something to do when I get back from lunch. Doing other things is not expected of you." I quickly agree before he walks out of the cubicle.
I always prioritize my work for the company but I have not been getting a heavy enough workload to constantly be occupied. In the past, whenever I hand him a completed assignment he says OK and brushes me off saying he will give me something else.
I want to be able to put this job on my resume so I always make sure I am respectful, but I was holding back telling off my fatass boss that I do everything he asks of me. I thought I handled the conversation well. Am I wrong in the situation? How should I go about it?
P.S. The glutton still isn't back from lunch after almost 2 hours.
