Teacher here:
If the kid is special ed/dealing with special circumstances causing him to do poorly in school (divorce, depression, etc) then yes it's definitely not appropriate.
BUT, if an athlete is failing because he's being lazy, skipping school and homework assignments, going to parties, etc. then I'm for sure calling him out to his teammates. We have kids do that all the time and if the parents are upset about the kid unable to do the bare minimum in school to stay eligible, then maybe they should be more concerned with actually helping their kid pass. 75% of my students with grade trouble have parents going through a divorce who stop paying attention to their grades/performance or, even sadder, can't get the kid to do anything because they've lost the respect from him/her for the life change. Sometimes other teammates and parents can provide some mentoring if I can't.
Stop worrying about other people's kids and howabout offer to tutor him if you're that concerned
What's Ferpa going to protect when the kid is ineligible for the big meet? Is the coach supposed t o tell everybody he has a knee injury?
Everybody already knows who the dumb and smart kids are anyway.
Finally. Someone making some sense. Again, the coach was talking to other parents, not teammates. Still, I understand your point. I'm happy to offer my older son to tutor the kid since he tutors other kids, and I guess it's ok if I know about it since no one here seems to think it's a big deal. He's a good kid, just took on harder classes than he should have. Thanks for the info.

The kid wasn't actually ineligible, but close. I don't know what a coach should say if he actually became ineligible. Spilling the kid's actual grades probably isn't the best idea though.
Only in college is this a problem. In high school, no.
Teacher - you are spot on. I would add that it is hardly an invasion of privacy to mention that a good student has excellent grades. That kind of feedback is appropriate and helpful and rewards the right kind of conduct and decisions.
who the eff cares?? well clearly u do. Don't go and cause a ruckus over something this silly. Jeez get a life.

Jesus Christ. I never said I was going to do anything about it. The other parents who the coach was talking to seemed pretty pissed off (enough to mention it to me and a few others) and I was worried THEY were going to the AD about it. I happen to like the coach and don't want him to be in trouble for this.
I have a life thank you. Do you?
are you really THAT bored??!?!??
You shouldn’t get so worked up about people’s responses. Not that big a deal. This is Letrun.com my man! You need a thick skin around here, as there are more trolls per capita here than any other website I have ever encountered.

Bingo.
So are you here to ask or to declare? You seem like a keyboard commando while also being a whiny weasel in real life.

This group really is daft. I was NOT eavesdropping. I was standing along the course waiting to cheer the team on and the coach was standing about 2 feet from me talking about the athlete and how it's embarrassing to HIM to have an athlete failing courses. He could have said all of that WITHOUT NAMING THE ATHLETE and TELLING THE PARENTS HIS FAILING GRADES AND WHICH CLASS IT IS. He WASN'T trying to get him a tutor, he was bashing an athlete. The parents he was talking to were uncomfortable with the discussion, and I didn't like hearing about this student either.
JFC people. If you're actually parents, I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate the coach bashing your kid to other parents.

Agreed. I’d be mortified if my coach told people what grade I’m in.
Same, bro.
If you are not a part of the problem, then you are not a part of the solution. Stop crying and mind your own business.
You are an eavesdropping tool. Seriously, mind your own business.
You post and ask for opinions and then get angry and defensive when people don't support what you did, and they don't give you the answer that you want.
If you really wanted to do something then you should have asked the coach about it when it happened. But to do that you would have to grow a pair. It is easier to post and vent your anger on LRC.
The problem with people like you is that the sport loses, the kids lose, and coaches stop trying to teach. I think there would have been more honor in you walking up to the coach and calling him/her/they :) out! It takes time to become a good coach, we have way too many mediocre coaches. A simple discussion may change the actions.
You have two clear choices.
You can forget about it. You heard something you shouldn't have, don't mention it to anyone.
If it's bugging you too much to let it go, You can tell the dumb kid. If he wants to make a big deal out of it, you can offer to support him. He's the wronged party in all this, if someone's gonna put this coach's nuts in a vice it should be him.
I'd recommend option 1.
Why didn't you man up and address the coach then instead of running to a safe space later to b*tch about it.
Bet this guys neighbors, co-worker's, waitress all hate him. Don't forget to make your weekly report to the homeowner's association on who's trash cans are visible from the street.
