A 23 is only one part of being able to run fast in the 800, and it's not really a high bar. If that is your limit then no. I'm sure some of the high mileage guys on here will say otherwise. But as someone who actually ran 1.44 and faster.......you need to bring a bigger knife to the fight.

If you ran 1:43xx why don't you identify yourself? It would be interesting to hear about your experiences from racing at that level.
Must be cool to be one of only 133 men to run sub 1:44, a shame you wish to remain anonymous.
Don't a lot of these elite 800m races go out in like 24.xx? I would say 22 mid at least.
D. Brazier, while he was in college did post on here. If you are not rude, maybe he will self identify.
Probably 24.0 for the pacers, with the actual competitors around 24.5, unless it's a world record attempt.
If this was directed at me, I do not see how my post was rude. I always enjoy hearing from the world's best on here.
It's a shame because typically self-identifying elites are usually torn apart by losers on here.
'old man 2 lapper' and 'SMCT SOB' have been posting useful info about the 800 on here for years. However, I don't know who they are or if they have every self-identified. But, given what I've seen from them before, I don't doubt that both have run fast and are qualified to discuss training (not that running fast always qualifies one to talk trainging).
You need 22

Steve Cram was an example of a fast 800m runner (admittedly a 1500m specialist) who supposedly wasn't a particularly fast sprinter.

Let's say you can currently run 23, 50 and 1:50. You could probably improve at 400m and 800m, but you could probably also improve at 200m.
Going through the heats at W.C. &/or Olympics, do you want to be the slowest 200m man in each heat? There is a reason why some sub-1:44 800 metres guys never bother to enter 800m at W.C. or Olympics.

Think about it.

Sub 1:44
Reference to "high mileage guys" i.e. not him
Use of restrained 70s style white dude metaphor (i.e. not "pop a cap in his a##" LOL!)

As someone who has run 23.1 fat and just under 14 (5k) and no faster than 1:53, I can tell you some of it has to do with gears. You can be quick and highly aerobic, but you also need some kind of speed strength that I never had and never understood.
BTW I think I know who the 1:44 2 lapper is. If it is him, he speaks the truth
I had 23.0 200m speed and only ended up running 1:50. I must be a bum.

I have a lot of trouble believing that you only could muster a 1:53 with 23.1 FAT and sub 14. Given more tries at the 800m, and possibly more specific training, you'd have to be able to manage around 1:50 at least.
I do agree that plugging in over distance and under distance times doesn't automatically give you X time for the between event, but it does certainly give you a ball park idea.
I never ran a FAT 200m when at my peak but I would have likely been low 23.XX as well, and I was probably only good for 15:XX high in the 5k, and I managed 1:52. You could go faster.

A 1:44.xx runner with 23.0 speed should be running the 1500m and challenging for a medal, not getting knocked out of an 800m semi-final at major champs.
