It could be argued that the 2008 Beijing Olympic Men's Marathon changed that way the marathons are run today. Particularly in an Olympic marathon race where the podium and medals are the goals, strategy had always been foremost in the race. At Beijing, Sammy Wanjiru, Jaouad Gharib and Deriba Marga stormed off on a warm day at a crazy pace and were surely doomed to failure, yet they triumphed in their attempt, except that Merga hit the wall in the tunnel and lost the bronze on the track.
As an aging runner, I get pumped up for my daily run by watching races I've copied from YouTube or boradcast events, yet I CAN'T FIND A COPY OF THIS AWESOME RACE. If someone has a copy of the full race, could you post it to YouTube? THANKS!
I recently became aware that this wasn't the first eyeball to eyeball clash between Wanjiru and Merga, as they had had a similar race at the RAK half marathon in 2007, running in a similar manner. Tremendous competitors. RIP Sammy Wanjiru, perhaps the greatest marathon competitor.
