As I have gotten older, one thing that I have realized about myself is that I am not particularly into gear. By gear, I don't mean shirts and warm-ups in college and stuff like that, I mean sports-related technology.
I don't mind other people enjoying their gear, I just don't really care for it. This certainly makes me a bad consumer, but does it make me a bad person?
Take running, for example: I buy shoes and normal running clothes. Heck, I even buy a nice piece of running clothing from Tracksmith every now and again. But I never run with GPS stuff and couldn't care less about Strava. I honestly could never be a cyclist because the gear you need just makes me feel tired. I run with a Timex Ironman from 1994.
I live near the mountains and I like to fish. I have a Tenkara fly rod and pretty much use that exclusively. When I go buy flies, I am always inundated with the latest rods and reels and gear, but I just don't really want to keep up with all of that. I just like fishing after a hard run. I don't want to buy a bunch of stuff.
This isn't something I am trying to do for some social or financial reason. This is just how I am. I am the same way with regular technology. It's not a phobia, it is just a preference. I have all of the normal gadgets one must have, but I wouldn't mind if we decided collectively to lose them.
I promise I am not a Luddite or some kind of hipster minimalist guy; I just prefer things streamlined. Anyone else like me?
