He also just ran 1:45.57 with only a 1.2 second positive split. That tends to indicate that he could have run closer to 1:45 flat with a 2 second positive split. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 4:05 come down a lot, quickly. The xc times are very surprising, especially considering that he is training at altitude and so should have much more endurance. He must be training very low miles fast and a lot of sprinter training. The question who is comparable is a good one. It seems right now that 400-800 guys would be the best comparison. Take three 800m Americans with strong 400s, Donavan Brazier, Clayton Murphy, and Boris Berian. Brazier has run a 45.9 4x400m split, at the least but his pr's in the open are 47.02 outdoors and 46.91 indoors. Murphy has split 45.4, and Berian has run the open in 46.93, back in 2011. Their 800m pr's are all within .6 of each other, Murphy 1:42.95 or so, Berian 1:43.34, and Brazier 1:43.55. Murphy and Brazier were both quite good at xc, though the latter only ran in high school. Currently, Murphy has run far better times at the mile (and 1500 converted) than Brazier's 3:59i mile, but the way Brazier closed in a mile in December suggests to me he can run low 3:50s as well. Berian's range doesn't seem to extend to the mile. So, it looks to me like Brazier and Murphy are a lot more similar to each other than we've thought and Staines is more similar to Berian but considerably faster at the 400m right now, almost a second faster in the open. If Staines does get that mile time down under 4, I could see him running 1:43, and he might even do it this year with the right competition. That is a super talented 20 year old.
