This meet wasn’t exactly the Great Lakes DI Regional. Winning is kind of the expectation at a meet like this.

I don’t understand the point. Is Mankato loaded with WI guys?

No, people were attacking WI native Rombough and his coaching abilities. If he really wanted credit in this thread he should have stayed at UW-River Falls and brought up that program from the trenches.
I did not read any attacks directed at Rombough
I heard Jake Reilly is the active coach. Can anyone confirm?

Reilly and Kramer are running the XC team while the University finds a suitable replacement for Corfeld.
Flotrack with the Badgers coming in hot at 9th.

I bet two of the Flotrack listed starters will be hurt, again. Change the ranking please.
has anyone mentioned their less than impressive showing at Parkside? Looks that getting mediocre recruits outside of the millers the past 8 years is finally showing.
My son ran 9:20 junior year. He made contact with the coach but then the coach just stopped responding so he went elsewhere.

I am sorry I never returned your son's email. In the midst of my busy summer writing training for a group of guys that a majority runs between 27 - 30 mins for an 8k, I forgot we could use someone who is fast. Please excuse my ignorance and let me offer your son a 1/10th scholarship.
Rumor has it UWM makes official announcement today and you may be surprised by the news. Team was shocked.
Admin seems to be set on erasing Corfeld legacy and starting fresh which could be good, but bad news for distance junkies: not a distance guy.
They will never be good. He was a D3 long jumper.

Their jumpers are gonna get a lot better!
In a seriousness, I doubt this guy will be the day-to-day XC coach. Who's the assistant, again? That guy will be running the distance program.
Please tell me Coach Basler is going to get a real distance coach and not Jake Rilez. Otherwise this program will fall from the top 3 in horizon League....
It's amazing how quickly things can change. Corfeld pushed out by Braun, new coach fires Kramer, writing is on the wall for Reilly and any other assistants. The complexion of this team is going to completely change, and it is going to be a hard and painful change. Look at what Basling is quoted saying in the press release.
"I am not big on 'success promises' – what I call where a new coach will say 'we plan to win by this certain year'," Basler said. "I feel there are too many things we can't control with opponents and other teams. We just have to focus on what we can control and how we respond. The promise I can make is that the process is going to be very good. And, usually, when the process is good, the outcome will be good as well. I am ready for the challenge and really grateful for the opportunity."
This translates to "I don't want to make any promises because Corfeld and his staff left me with nothing to work with. We are going to suck for a while until I change the staff and recruit kids I believe in. So just hang in there with for the next 2-3 years."
For the record, he's not wrong to think that, but it is stupid for him to say it out loud. If I am a kid on the team, I would be so pissed to read that. Some guy who has never run a single practice at uwm or anywhere as a head coach is making comments like that on his opening press release? That is no way to build trust with your current student athletes.
Looking forward though, UWM did need to hit the reset button and get new blood into the system. They have gone nowhere over the past 5 years as other teams in the league have passed them by. It will be interesting to see who Basler decides to hire for his staff. Will he give the new distance coach enough scholarships to be competitive? Who will he consider? Lots of question marks. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
But he didn't say that out loud. You put words in his mouth for him. I am not the least bit convinced your translation is accurate. He's probably an honest guy that doesn't want to make any empty promises. Is that so bad?
No one is asking him to come in there and say we will win a horizon league title by year X, but you have to understand the audience you are giving your first public remarks to. The overwhelming majority of people who are reading this presser are alums, current students, local runners, and parents of high schoolers. They are all going to be confused by Basler speaking out of both sides of his mouth saying things like "There is a rich history and tradition of winning at Milwaukee" (under Pete Corfeld), but "I am looking to bring in a new energy and a new passion.", (insinuates Pete and Co. severely lacked that). Then goes out of his way to say "I am not big on 'success promises'", which indicates he does not have a lot of faith in the team he is inheriting, also a major indictment on Corfeld again.
My point is, you can think all of these things, and they can all be true, but you need to be mindful of how things come across. If I read it that way, there are probably a lot more people who did too, including Pete Corfeld, who from my understanding has a very good relationship with his alums. Sometimes being honest and real is not a good thing. This was not a positive first presser for Coach Bassler.
Saying "I look to bring in a new energy and passion" has to be the most basic thing a new coach can say when he takes a new job. I honest to God have to have read or heard new coaches use some version of that quote over 100 times in my life. Bassler could be replacing Mark Wetmore and I bet he'd still say that. The only reason you could possibly believe that he insinuated Corfield lacked passion is because you yourself believe Corfield lacked passion. I certainly did not take it like that, and I bet the vast majority of people did not take it like that. I think you are being very unfair to this man Bassler. You don't have the slightest idea what is going on inside of his brain.
The source of our disagreement is this. You believe that these quotes from Bassler insinuate that Corfield was a bad coach. I don't think they insinuate anything at all. I see nothing in them at all other than typical coach-speak.
