Ranking WI collegiate distance programs

Normally when you under preform expectations to that degree (especially when you were never really in the race: see the splits) it means you were recently sick or injured. Peak Bekele with the actual flu is going to lose to college scrubs; it's unfair but reality. In other sports your skill can keep you afloat when sick or hurt; in track you just can't.

This program has hit a 40 year low. 2 out of 3 years not making NCAA's for XC, 13:15 kid runs 10th place in Big Ten 5k a month after the Commonwealth Games, and a list of decorated national elite athletes that have burned out or can't even make it to the starting line. I made this comment previously. Why let your best runner skip indoors when your program is best described as a "dumpster fire." Was Morgan's performance at CG amazing. And now we get this at Big Tens!

Here is a nice rundown of the weekend for the men:

1. 43 points with 2 of them coming outside the 1500-10K and multis. Two!!

2. Nobody other than Hoare qualified for any running finals.

3. Couldn't even scrape together a 4x100 or 4x400 squad (do they even need a sprint coach?).

4. No entries at all in 10 of the 21 events.

Mick will spin some crap about how great Ollie, Hardy, and Ben did. The area he puts all of the focus in could only muster 22 points. I really doubt it, but I hope Barry is paying attention to this. He was handed the keys to smooth running Cadillac and has reduced it to a '87 Ford Festiva.

ZERO Wisco men qualify for Nationals in the 10k.

rumors are starting to heat up that the top WI runners that are juniors (including Bosley) are not very interested in Wisconsin. And I don't blame them...

I read that on tracktalk this morning too. What a shame if true!

They will be in the middle of the Big10 within 2 years and it is hard to move off of that spot. Michigan has taken over as the distance team after wining XC for both men and women.

Marquette and UW-Milwaukee can both give scholarships, and both would struggle to finish in the top three in the WIAC, which is all teams without the ability to give scholarships. Kind of embarrassing.

I agree that it is embarrassing. I have tried to figure it out and the only real explanation has to be that they are underfunded. I am guessing that they only have a few scholarships for men. The kids that attend the WIAC schools are normally local and they are trying to save money so they wouldn't consider Marquette because of cost and wouldn't consider Milwaukee because of location.

Did anyone take a look at what it took to get into the D3 National meet? Here is a picture for you.

Thats it. Only 1 guy from each school. No one in the 800, 5000, or 10000. Maybe those teams ran better than last year, but they still suck. WIAC schools develop athletes way better than UWM and MU. If you want to run well in college you won't move to the 414.

Noticed a listing of kids for UW-Milwaukee and Marquette on here. Does anyone know who is getting added to Wisco or the Wiac schools? Please help fill in a list.

These kids are smart. Why would they join a sinking ship and get run into the ground. I predict Mick will retire next year after they host nationals. I don't see him getting fired before. It's very sad to see him ruin a 40 year run of success.

Mick has to feel pretty good about his recruits going 1-2-3 in the 800 at the Division 1 state meet. 800 running (among other things) has been a huge deficit for the Badgers. Belson and Koch are probably going to be 400-800 types, Fellman a 800-1500 guy.

Big winner continues to be UW-Milwaukee though. All relative of course. But they were able to follow up their two stars from this past year (Tagliapietra, Sippy) with two more promising stars. Wenzel wins the 1600-3200 in D2, Fitzgerald with a 4th place 800 and 4x8 title.
