This past October (2016) I might have made a huge mistake.
I ran track in university, graduating in 2013 and keep in close contact with several teammates. Every year, the school hosts a XC race and many alumni runners go back to race and socialize afterwards - it's all very fun. Following this past year's race I was talking with one of my old teammates who was an excellent multi-eventer. One thing led to another and we ended up making a bet.
He has until the end of 2019 to run a sub 3 hour marathon. If he does it, I pay him $1000. Otherwise he pays me $1000. Injury from training does not void the bet.
Now here's some background info on the potential marathoner:
- At the time of the bet he was close to 200lb and a bit under 6ft.
- He had not competed or trained for track in close to a yr (graduated in 2014)
- He works full-time in an office so doesn't have tons of time to train.
PBs:
100m: 11.6 (wind legal)
400m: 53.5
1K (indoors at end of pent): 2:50 He never ran within 10 seconds of his fastest time ever again.
High jump: 1.93m (his best event when he competed in multievents)
Long jump: 6.4m
Shotput: 13.9m
Now this morning he just ran a 10K race to assess progress and went 41:17 without pushing too hard. He still weighed in the high 180s. To be honest, this is much faster progression than I originally anticipated.
Letsrun... Did I make a huge mistake?
