46.55 400m split (converted from 46.9y) on a muddy track with a 3:55 mile in his legs from earlier that day absolutely suggests Ryun was sub 47 capable. He ran to the level of the competition in the relay, it being his tertiary event.
It may suggest he had the ability to run sub 47 for 400m, but he never actually did.
For a start the 46.9 was hand timed, so more like 47 flat FAT. That is with a running start, so it was more like a 47.7 from a stationary start. That’s worth 47.4 for 400m.
Secondly, Ryun ran many 400/440 relay legs, including his best year of 67, yet never ran sub 47 in any other race.
Ryun’s Relay efforts often didn’t result in victory for his team, so surely he’d have run his fastest to try and pass those infront of him? Yet still, never broke 47 again in a relay.
Is running a mile earlier in the meet that significant?
If so, then what does Coe’s 45.6 relay, while stumbling at the handover and starting from almost a stationary start, just 90 mins after front running a 1:44.0, worth?
