Considering that Murphy's secondary event is the 1500m, I was surprised to read that he anchored Akron with a 45.4 indoors to win MAC. COuldn't find a video.
That puts his speed up with Berian, with superior endurance. Which may be why he beat Berian at Drake.

Clayton Murphy 45.4 split

Seriously impressive for a guy who I thought was more of an 8/15 guy.
-
45.4-400 split
30:43-10k XC
Best range in the NCAA? -
Super talented dude. I have a feeling we are just starting to see his capabilities. He seems like a natural 4/8 type; I would like to see him leave the 1500 alone for a couple of years.

HS 100m PR of 11.84, despite bad start:
"He might be the only collegiate distance runner in the country whose university bio lists his 100-meter personal best: 11.84, which he ran in high school. When I bring this up to Murphy, he can’t help but muster a chuckle. “That sub-12 100 is kind of embarrassing because of how slow I was out of the blocks,†he wryly admits. “My dad always says that I was probably the ninth guy out of the blocks, and there were only eight guys in the race. Everyone else had a step and a half on me.†"

Might be capable of sub-22. -
I think if he runs 8/15 at ncaas/oly tris he wins. Im a fan of this kid and think he has the chance to become an american great. Hes never had a pacer to run all out but i think if he did hed run 350 for mile. Maybe even beat centro

This young man seems to be exceptionally talented and to top it off his coach, Lee Labadie, is outstanding with middle distance runners. Great combination.

Not buying it. He ran on the 4x400 at East Regionals, which had legit split timing, and posted a 46.99 on the third leg.
Akron 3:06.80 1:33.45 [1:33.45] 2:20.43 [46.99] 3:06.80 [46.38]
Does not compute to 45.4 on an indoor 300m flat track, where the winning open 400m time was 47.27.
Akron 4x4 finished 13th overall at regionals, one spot out of qualifying, so won't be an event for him at NCAA. -
Seems Ovett-like in terms of range. At the point when Ovett ran 1:45, he was running 47-mid, but was slower in HS for 100m, so while 45-mid for a relay is push, 46.xx seems doable for the open 400m. Maybe with the stick and a title on the line a 45 carry was there. It would be nice to have a video.
Very talented dude in every respect. -

He had to almost come to a complete stop after someone got in his way at the exchange.
He ran an auto 45.95 split in the same meet last year. -
46.99 was a bit slower than I expected. 45.95 split on 400m outdoor I accept. Shaq Walker ran a 45.31 split in the West meet this year.
But not the 45.4 on a smaller flat track. Looks like a hand time. -
link or post the results!
Impressive 400 splits from mid-d guys, anything under 47 is wicked fast and usually distance guys are exaggerating. -

Tend to agree.
45.4 is the fastest relay split Kipketer ran in 97, a week before squalling the 800 WR!
And I can't think of many 400 specialists who could run that on an indoor track. -

No. -
Clayton Murphy could be the next great white
-
He has the same 800 PR and a faster 100m PR than Steve Ovett did when the latter ran 21.7h.

He had a post on social media after his ncaa win where he said something like "this is just the beginning. Next stop, 3:30."
I was pretty surprised to see him declare for the 1500 but maybe they know something we don't and he'll be the next Wheating and run 3:30 this summer. He's certainly got unbelievable talent.
If he can stay healthy he is definitely a threat to make either team this summer and be a force on the national level for years.
Hasn't he run 14:15? He's basically got Wheating/Andrews mid distance times but with much strength. -
On paper, that strength should help with the rounds which he seems to handle well.
-
He's a bit of a thicker kid. Should slim down for the 1500 and even 800
-
He has run 14:11 at Raliegh Relays last year (2 weeks or so after running 800 at indoor nationals). He is two time xc all region in the great lakes. 30:30 at 10k?
He also anchored at 1st rounds this passed weekend. Results says he split 46.3 and if he came to a stop or even ran into a runner the should have easy been under 46.0 and split closer to 45.5.
He will win NCAA 1500
