Daniels' Half Marathon Plan: MP for 10% or 20% of mileage

Using Daniels' 3rd edition book for half marathon training and noticed in his Phase II plan a discrepancy. When he describes the plan he says "added a couple of runs at M pace and these runs are not longer than 20% of weekly mileage or 18 miles, the lesser amount." But in the following table which is example training plan, says "M run to total not more than 10% of weekly mileage, but at least 4 miles."

Looked on internet but can't determine which percentage to is correct. The M run in lieu of a long run, so am assuming it is 20% of mileage. Anyone know which to use? Thanks!

Does the 20% refer to long run distance at easy pace and 10% refer to distance at M pace?

You should take that with a grain of salt, and simply work off of ability or comfort level. So you can do it anywhere between 10% to 20% of your weekly mileage.

You could do a 12 to 15 mile L run, and then a 7 to 10 mile M run, and then a 4 to 6 mile tempo run all in one week....So the slower you go the more mileage you can put in based off of your weekly mileage, if that makes sense.

Daniels' book is a training tool that can be modified according to the ability and foundation of the runner. You don't have to take it step by step, but you want to make sure that the principles and methods of his book remain intact.

One is about the total distance of a run, the other only about the M part.

This is what I work off; e.g. during a 70 mile week, I'll do a 14 mile run with 7 @ MP.

10% in a single run, 20% in weekly total, i.e. you can do two M runs in a week. If you are running 70 mpw (110 kpw), you can do 1E + 7M + 1E twice (2K E + 11K M + 1K E). Note that at the beginning of the plan you are a few VDOTs lower, so it's easier than true marathon pace.
