Big surprise, huh?
How does someone like Deeja who wasn't really a top runner afford EPO? I thought the stuff was expensive..
A person like Deeja can't afford not to be on it. Without it, she is nothing.
There are two kinds of athletes, performance-enhancing drug users and losers.
Want to get rid of drugs in sport, get rid of the money in sport. Otherwise, plan for an enduring, uphill, futile battle.
from Santa Teddy and Easter Bunny Eddie.
i just feel bad for teddy. the poor guy was tainted by dating her. he and marion should start a support group for SO's of dopers.
That's gotta be messed up when USADA shows up at her door for the OOC test. What would go through her head? "Oh shit, they got me now."
Here's a conspiracy theory for those who like such things:
If you know you're in the out-of-comp pool, USADA, at least theoretically, knows your whereabouts every day of the year. Why would you even bother taking drugs? Unless, of course, you expected some sort of "protection"-- i.e. a promise from someone high up that you would be overlooked in the course of "random" testing. I imagine this goes on, but only with people who have much greater star power than Deeja. I know that some of the sport's lesser figures get tested up to 5 times per year. Perhaps the powers-that-be trust that the "little guys" in the sport aren't doping, and are content to test them over and over and over, leaving the big fish to do as they will. This way, the anti-doping agencies make their numbers, "proving" that the sport is mostly clean, and secure the star power of the best athletes, keeping the MONEY (the bottom line to everything) flowing.
Now, I don't believe that there are many doping distance runners in the U.S., if any, but I do think that this plays out if not within USADA, then for sure within WADA.
Why does it take a whole year to finalize guilt? Seems to me like it's a straightforward case, if she's not contesting anything.
That ought to get the ball rolling.
How to you explain the Balco thing where USADA got a syringe in the mail and then went after the top people in the sport.
USADA is out to catch cheats, the old guard wasn't necessarily on the same page.
And there are lots of people who dope who are randomly tested. To get busted for EPO they have to test you within a few days of you taking the drug. A lot of people are willing to take the gamble. Not to mention if there are ways to mask it which i haven't heard of, but it wouldn't surprise me. It just shows why we need more $$$ for drug testing reseach. The pro sports contribue $$$. Until the drug testers get better tests to detect EPO farther back and designer steroids, a clean test doesn't really mean anything.
I don't know about USADA, but my experience is that this happens in the NCAA. I was a walk on, and just barely fast enough to compete semi regularly, and I got tested every semester. Our track team had some NCAA qualifiers only one of whom ever got tested out of competition, the football team had a first round draft pick one year and he never got tested, etc. It was always me, some other lousy track athletes, a couple of swimmers, some 3rd string football guys, and maybe one of the golfers. Never anyone who was any good.
I think anyone that is busted should have to give all their prize money to USADA. And the employee of USADA giving the test gets a cut. Just like a commision or bounty, you have a territory and test all you want. Bribing the employee might get a little out of hand. How many testers do you think accept a bribe?
so when will her "coach," one Theodore Mitchell, get popped? Karma is such a beautiful thing.
I heard that Teddy dropped the dime on Eddy. So how did Deeja go down?

Slowly and erotically.

Teddy was pissed about Eddy running off to train in Chula Vista with Vigil prior to the Oly Trials (remember this was when Teddy was bragging about being Eddy's coach) so he annonymously turned Eddy in to USADA. Teddy then made the mistake of opening his big mouth (something he has a hard time with his entire life) and told people about turning Eddy in. Shawn got word of it and turned in Deeja.

That's right. It's all about whether you kiss my ass. A clean test doesn't really mean anything.
BALCO would fit the conspiracy theory. These people are looked after, even though they're taking known substances (to distinguish from THG, which didn't "exist" until after the syringe) such as HGH and EPO. Then, one day, a syringe shows up in the mail, and their situation goes off the wire. All of a sudden, someone- a third party, who clearly wants to see the top athletes get busted- exposes knowledge of who is taking what. USADA has no choice but to strike. If they ignore it or cover it up, they will be exposed as accomplices. Wejo, you probably know more about the BALCO events than I do, but this is how I would see it within the conspiracy theory.
Wejo, you make the risk of taking EPO seem minimal. If you're one of the people who's tested 3 times per year out-of-comp, that's a pretty big risk. Suppose you take EPO once a week, and it's detectable for JUST 3 DAYS after injection. You stop taking it before competitions so as to avoid in-comp testing. Still, you're at-risk for a +test 43% of the time out-of-comp. I'm no statistician, but if you're tested 3 times in a year, you have just a 19% chance of getting through undetected. And that's just 3 tests.
We also have to imagine that there's a new drug. Something not yet detectable, perhaps not yet even known to anti-doping agencies. After all, EPO is between 15 and 20 years old. A reliable test has only been in place since 2000, and even this one can't detect usage older than several days. How long will it take for the new drug to be testable?
slc- I hear you about the NCAA/University out-of-comp testing. I was one of the better guys on my college team and was only tested individually once in 5 years. Meanwhile, guys (especially one guy in particular!) who would rarely even get to race were tested every semester. The team was tested every couple years, but it was just a hair test (prob. for pot) and everyone would know a week or two in advance. The team test was somewhat easy to miss or postpone.

I don't know if this story is true, but it sounds completely plausible.
if you know Teddy, then it is EASILY believable

I don't know how often EPO has to be taken but I think a wek sounds right. I know that ARENESP didn't have to be taken as often and was the drug of choice for dopers for this reason until the dopers realized it is detectable in your system much longer so people got back on EPO. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Did anyone notice that Eddy received his ban from the date of the test in Jan 2004 and Ms. Youngquist received a ban starting over 9 months after her test in March? This is interesting. Eddy in affect has the shortest ban in the history of the sport and the woman has to go by the rules. This sounds like discrimination against the quiet lady.
Observant!
