There are many arguments about why East Africans dominate, one of which is that they are born and raised at altitude. When that argument is made, others on the boards tend to point to such and such a place that's altitude and doesn't produce (many) elite runners.

It jointly shows population density and altitude across the globe. Dark red areas have large populations at altitude (potentially controversially defined as 1000m which is probably too low for significant benefits) and might help us narrow our focus when thinking about what else is different about Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanazania (what up, world cross!), etc.
