This question cannot be answered without additional information:
Current mileage?
Previous PRs for events like 400, 800, 1600?
Age/Grade?
FYI....If all you are worried about is being "sub 4:40", I would worry more about doing intervals with less recovery (either 50%, or if you must, 100%, but not double. Leave that for later in the season.)
Senior
Prs 4:39 1600 (2014)10:15 3200, 2:05 800 ,53.9 400 split
Season Best 4:44 -1600 2:06 -800
Currently run around 30mpw my longest run being around 7 miles
I also do 4 mile tempos around 5:50 pace also.

In what instance would you run 100% rest late in the season? Just looking for examples..
Sorry about that... I meant do the 50% 100% rest early and 200% later....like tune up workouts faster than race pace with full rest.
Bump
Im a junior with a 4:29 PR,
I donno dude, probably around 4:34-35 ish
Im currently hovering around the 50-55 mpw, i think you should just bump the mileage a little bit to give yourself a bit more strength seeing as you fell off the pace a tad around 2/3 into the workout. If you got yourself to consistently be around 40-45 mpw i know youd find yourself more able to handle that kind of workout.
This is coming from a younger runner so idk, that is just my opinion
Yea I'm starting to build back up. This was my second workout back from a stress fracture.
Yes, no reason that you would not be able to run under 4:40. Go out in 2:19 - 2:21 and see what happens. Worst case scenario, you miss by a few seconds and get it soon.
I think you are definitely in shape to run 4:34-6, go out in 2:17 and see what happens I would say.

better suited for 400/800
3:56, no problem. Just go out in 26 for the first 200 and hold on the rest of the way, it'll be easy.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
