Summer Training

I really, really, really want to make my varsity team next fall and I know that I will need to practice a lot. My break essentially starts June 8th, and goes to September 1st. The course we will be running is 2.5 miles, but we have an occasional 5k race. The seven man team has one of the best runners in the country, but there will be 3 spots open after the seniors leave. Can any of you think of a training schedule that I could follow to run to my full potential in the fall? I plan to run in the mornings- would swimming in the afternoons (still doing the morning run) hurt or help this training? Also, how can I find the motivation to do these runs, as the first week or two is always hard to find the drive.

swimming would help but if you don't have motivation for yourself and need someone to encourage you then you don't want this badly enough.

There's lots of different training plans you could follow out there. One that may work for someone else may not work for you. I would research some different training plans online and test them out to see which one works best for you. There are some similarities in most training plans though. The first one is build a good base. Don't start off too fast or this could lead to injuries. You have a long time between June 8th and September 1st so don't feel rushed to jump into workouts right away. Once you've built your base, you can incorporate workouts and longer runs. Common workouts include tempos, hill workouts, mile repeats, and others. Swimming would be a great supplement to your training and you could even consider incorporating an afternoon run. I know it sounds like a lot to run twice a day but it can be very beneficial if you are ready. As far as motivation goes, focus on your goals. If you want it bad enough, it shouldn't be hard to get out and do your runs. But don't just go do your runs because you want to make Varsity. Do it because you love to run. If you do it for your love or passion for running it makes it so much easier.

You clearly don't have the motivation to be great, but that doesnt mean you cant be average. Just bust your a this summer. Run inthe morning, swim or run in the afternoon. Know your body, stay healthy and have fun.
