If you're too young to have seen the show, at least read the wikipedia article, "Ralph is very short tempered, frequently resorting to bellowing, insults and hollow threats. Well-hidden beneath the many layers of bluster, however, is a soft-hearted man who loves his wife and is devoted to his best pal, Ed Norton."
The Ralph character lived at a time when a working-class guy like him might have punched a wife as sharp-tounged as Alice, but Ralph didn't. Deep-down he was good guy who loved his wife. The writer's used it as a device to show his humanity, not to get a laugh out of domestic violence. The fact domestic violence was referenced on the show at all says more about the time then it does about the morals of the show's producers.
