Wow, that's horrible. I know these planes are supposed to be ultra reliable, but......
I flew Malaysian Airlines once (about five years ago). Great customer service on-board.
This one was unlucky enough to collide with a missile.
Some outlets are saying it was shot down with a missile. Probably too early to know if this is true?
A Ukrainian cargo plane was shot down by the Russians last week. Reports are putting out the possibility that the method of identifying a plane by military is via the transponder, which had been the problem with the prior Flight 370 crash. Here, Malaysian Airlines also lost contact, not clear if transponder/contact lost prior to or as a result of the crash.
Shot down by Russians.
Ukrainian fighter shot down earlier today (or yesterday) too. Pilot ejected safely.
Still early to speculate but 777s just don't drop out of the sky at 33,000 ft.
Watched the news last night and Bob Scheifer of CBS said that the world is in a treacherous situation, more tense than the Cold War. We have highly volatile situations in Ukraine-Russia, Syria-Iraq, Israel-Palestine. Any one of these or all could blow up into an all out conflagration at any time.
Here we go down that path wrote:

Oh boy - could this be seen as an act of war? Taking down a civilian flight? Not good...
RIP to the victims.
If reports that these plane was shot, then this has nothing to do with reliability or Boing. A legitimate question is if it was a good idea to fly over that area. Not sure what other airlines with similar flights (e.g. Singapore) are doing.

It still may, if the transponder was not working and thus did not send out an identifying signal, resulting in a military response.
The Boeing 777 has a known defect which causes cockpit fires. On the other side of the coin, my friends in the Ukraine say they haven't seen it.
I can't believe there hasn't been an "it's Obama's fault" or "it's Bush's fault" post yet.
Indications/photos on the ground are that the plane came apart at altitude, with a strewn crash site. Leads to a mid-air explosion, so possibilities include surface to air missile, not a shoulder to air, which top out at 14,000 feet.
CNN has Bob Baer (former CIA operative) on now. He says all indications are leading to a Russian anti-aircraft missile. I believe him, the dude is always money on these issues.
Wow - this is pretty nuts.

Per a tweet I just saw, all other flights are now re-routing around Eastern Ukraine.

They are ultra reliable and neither Air Malaysia incident has any effect on their reliability.
It's easy to forget, but the U.S. Navy accidentally shot down an Iranian passenger flight in 1988 killing all 290 on board.
Someone at Harvard thinks it is Obama's fault:
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
