I know there have been threads in the past, but I was hoping to start an updated discussion on training in racing flats. There was an original thread that got me interested in the idea (http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=102856&page=0) but it seems rather outdated at this point.
A few discussion starters:
1. From a logistical standpoint, it makes sense to me that we would be better off as runners not using a big padded shoe as a crutch of sorts, and that by strengthening our feet/legs, we would become better runners (remember, the point after all is to run FAST, not run "correctly").
2. Are there any examples of fast runners (pro/college/etc) that do the majority/all of their training in flats?
3. On the original thread that I linked to above, there are many instances of runners stating that they had been uninjured since making the switch. That was many years ago though (2003/2004/2005). Any updates from those runners?
4. Any benefit to training in "real minimalist shoes" (i.e. NB minimus) vs. just wearing any racing flats (i.e. the significantly cheaper entry level flats - hagio, streak, etc)?
5. What is the best way to transition from traditional trainers to minimalist shoes? Each time you wear through a shoe, replace it with one with slightly less cushioning?
Feel free to respond to any and all of the above questions.
